St Paul was born in Tarsus, a largely inhabited town and a highly busy trading port for ships transporting people and goods across the Mediterranean Sea. This means that many different theological beliefs were brought to Paul’s hometown. The Greeks were pagans, meaning that they worshipped many gods, not just one. In 33 CE, the Mediterranean world was thoroughly populated by Jews, and gentiles were not extremely common. The Roman empire ruled and controlled so much of this region, because of its astounding military conquers. They ruled the Mediterranean from 264-133 BCE, which meant that they were in power when St Paul was alive. Latin and Greek were the most common languages spoken in this time, but other languages were spoken amongst the pilgrims.

In his early years, Saul believed that the Christians were the enemy. He persecuted this “cult”, and took part in stoning many Christian leaders. One day he pursued a group of Jesus’ followers heading to Damascus and was struck down by a blinding light, in which Jesus appeared to him and told him to convert to Christianity.
After this vision, Saul continued on his journey to Damascus where he was baptised as Paul. His conversion was so significant because of how much he had changed since his days of beating and stoning Christians, to becoming one himself. Today, he is classified as one of the most influential preachers because without him, there would be no Christianity.

Paul’s Third Missionary Journey led him on a trek from Antioch of Syria to Galatia, stopping at other populated cities. In Galatia he revisits the churches which he founded on one of his previous journeys. He then walks to Ephesus, and stays for a little more then three years, writing epistles and preaching to the public. Next he travels to Troas, and then further through Macedonia to Thessalonica. Here he preaches again, and teaches until late in the night. The next leg of his trip leads him to Greek cities such as Athens and Corinth, where he spends his time evangelising to the pagans. He then sails back up to Philippi, to Troas again, then walks through the seaside towns of Assos, Mitylene, Miletus, Cos, Rhodes, Patara and then sailing to Tyre. After preaching in Tyre, he walks to Ptolemais and finally finishes his Third Journey in Jerusalem, the city in which Jesus spent most of his life.

EXPLAIN THE PURPOSE OF PAUL'S LETTERS AND IDENTIFY THE MAIN MESSAGES IN HIS PREACHING IN 100 WORDS

There were a few common themes which can be easily recognised in Paul’s epistles. In general, the letters were to clarify what was important. In his letter to the Romans, he chose to preach about the gospel as the revelation of God’s righteousness, a righteousness that can be experienced only by faith (Romans 1:16-17). Paul’s teachings were mainly aimed to promote the meaning of Jesus' life, death and resurrection, and what he did for the world, by sacrificing his life for our salvation. This is shown in this excerpt:
“The death he died, he died to sin, to sin once for all; but the lives he lives, he lives to God” from Paul’s letter to the Romans (6:10-11).
Another key value demonstrated in his letters is the hope and joy which God can, and will bring us if we follow Jesus and his gospel teachings.
His thoughts are summed up in one commandment: "You shall love your neighbour as yourself."

IDENTIFY AND EXPLAIN IN 50-100 WORDS A CULTURAL CHALLENGE FOR PAUL THAT IS REVEALED IN ONE OF HIS EPISTLES

In one of his letters to the Galatians, he explored and debated a cultural challenge facing the status of the Jewish law, and what was required in order for Gentiles to become Christians. Galatian communities were established by Paul, and at this time, no demand for circumcision was made of Gentile converts. Sometime after the preliminary period of evangelisation, a group of Jewish Christians made their way to Galatia and were persuading people that in order to be saved, one needed to follow the requirements of the Jewish law, particularly to be circumcised. Paul’s felt his honour had been challenged and he had to defend himself by writing this letter.

I have chosen to express Paul’s letter to the Philippians (2:1-5), and relate it to present day aspects of life. I believe that this epistle is displaying to humankind that Christ is the representation of love, the icon of compassion, and the focus point of joy. It is telling people to do nothing selfish, but to be humble and “regard others as better than yourselves.” This statement from his letter suggests that humans are becoming more and more selfish, and do things for their own benefits, rather than others. This message is applicable for unique individuals and groups of people today. It is most likely because the wealthy people in today’s society are greedy and self-absorbed, meaning that there are less material goods for the poor people. It explains to the reader that joy, love, sympathy, compassion and humility are key values to live by in our everyday lives.
