Poetry, indeed, can be a bit difficult for children to understand. Reason, just like mine, children don't know how to read them and evaluate them. Children could also have had bad experiences with poems because they have been forced to dissect it or do another assignment for it.
Children dislike free verse and haiku poems. They know poems are suppose to rhyme and free verse poems do not.
Children prefer narrative poems because they are used to narrative stories because they tell a story. Sound devices in the poems are elements that they also prefer; alliteration & onomatopoeia. Another preference is contemporary poems because children can recognize the language.
Poetry can be more enjoyable by children if the poems have imagery where the child can visualize it in their mind and expand their imagination. Students should be able to interact with poems like in Readers Theater.

Fantasy Fiction are stories that break the law of reality. They may have magic.
Science Fiction is a division of fantasy. Although it also breaks the law of reality, science fiction involves more science, technology, inventions and may have occurred in the future or unrealistic world. It comes in different types of sub categories; hard science fiction and soft science fiction.
-apocalyptic, post apocalyptic, biopunk, steampunk, cyberpunk, elfpunk, dystopia, extra-sensory perception, cinder, space/aliens/extraterrestrial, time travel/parallel universe, virtual reality/gaming
Many people may dislike Science Fiction but they may not understand that even though the setting is SCI-FI, the story can still have the same theme, conflict, drama as other genres may have.

I would like to gain more knowledge on all three genres and feel more confident when reading and teaching poetry to children. Science Fiction is not something that sparks my interest very much, but I believe that knowing whats out there in this area can help me enjoy it and expose children to it more.

I am familiarized with some forms of poetry and most of its elements.

-Narrative, Lyrical, Humorous, Free Verse
-End Rhyme, Repetition, Rhythm, Alliteration, Onomatopoeia, Imagery

This current week we are learning about poetry and imagery. My students were able to use the 5 senses to visualize a poem and create one of their own. I have never felt too comfortable teaching "poetry" because a lot of the times I have had trouble understanding the message and visualizing what the poet is trying to convey.

This genre is easier for my students to understand because although its a story that is made up, they can relate to the stories, they have characters, setting, a believable problem and the events could happen in real life.

These categories can bring endless possibilities to share with children to support the enjoyment of reading. As a current 3rd grade teacher, this information is relevant to the topics and correlate to the TEKS in our curriculum. Data at our campus showed low mastery in poetry 2 years ago and it continues to be one of our weakest skill. I can share this information with my colleagues during grade level meetings when planning lessons and looking for resources for our English Language Arts instruction.
