This project consists of three tasks. 1). Briefly describe to your international peers what American/Taiwan elementary education looks like (could use the school you did your practicum or you attended as an example. 2). The elementary teacher I want to be in an image. Provide an image of what kind of elementary teacher you want to be and a very brief description (no more than 5 sentences). Choose a motto you are inspired by! You can use the motto online (giving credits). You are strongly encouraged to use AI to create your ideal image! 3). Thoughtfully respond to your peers' postings.

Posting Deadline: 10/16; Response deadline: 10/18

American Elementary Education looks like

American elementary schools typically serve students from pre-K through 5th grade, with most of the day spent in one classroom under the guidance of a single teacher who covers multiple subjects such as math, writing, science, social studies, and reading. Additionally, students participate in "specials" like music, art, physical education, and library sessions.

The typical school day lasts around seven hours. For instance, at my placement school, the day begins at 7:40 AM with math, followed by reading and writing. After a break for recess and lunch, the focus shifts to social studies or science, although math and reading are essential components of the daily schedule. At the end of the day, students tidy up and prepare for dismissal at 2:15 PM. They have various options for heading home, including taking buses, being picked up in cars or vans, or walking. Afterschool activities like book clubs, gardening, and art are available, along with sports such as soccer and basketball, providing students with both academic and recreational opportunities.

The Elementary teacher I want to Be

My dream job would be to inspire and develop young minds as an elementary school teacher. I believe in creating a warm and engaging classroom environment where students feel safe and excited to learn. My goal is to make learning engaging by implementing hands-on experiences and group projects that encourage critical thinking. In order to help students understand their part in supporting one another, I want to demonstrate the potential of community and teamwork. In the end, I want to encourage my students to grow into self-assured, caring people who are ready to learn about the world.

Hello, I’m Lloren Sullivan, and today I’ll be presenting an overview of the educational system in the U.S. I’ve created a visual presentation using AI to illustrate the type of elementary teacher I aspire to be. My approach as an educator is rooted in four core values: inclusivity, creativity, integrity, and collaboration. I believe that fostering an inclusive classroom environment, encouraging creative thinking, maintaining ethical standards, and promoting teamwork are essential to nurturing the next generation of learners. Through this presentation, I hope to share my vision for making a positive impact in education.

This image is a perfect depiction of the type of teacher I want to be. I say this because this picture shows everyone working together and in a very happy, positive mood. No one is hiding behind other classmates, and it seems as though no one is afraid to make a mistake or get an answer wrong. They are working together, and everyone is participating. This is exactly how I want my classroom to look and the type of teacher I want to be. I want to create an environment that exudes positivity and inclusivity, where every student feels safe, valued, and respected. My goal is to build a family/community in my classroom and create a space free of bullying, where everyone is kind, shows empathy, and supports one another. Collaboration will be heavily encouraged, ensuring students understand that all of their peers are unique in their own way and differences are celebrated. I feel as though by modeling respectful communication and addressing all negative behavior with the appropriate consequences, I can teach students the importance of lifting each other up, both inside and outside of the classroom.

I also strive to be a teacher who views mistakes and wrong answers as learning opportunities. By doing this I want to encourage students to take risks and not to let fear of judgement get in the way of them putting in effort and engaging in productive struggle. A quote that I want them to embed into their minds is “failure is part of the growth process”. Lessons will be hands-on, and relatable, so students see learning as fun and meaningful.

Elementary school in America

In most schools here in Georgia, United States the teachers start the day off by arriving at school early around 7:00-8:30 am and they get ready for the day. The students arrive a bit later than the teachers. They will listen to the morning announcements, say the pledge, and have a “Morning Meeting” . The school day is very organized and each grade level follows a different schedule including lunch and recess. Some teachers in 3-5 grade only each 2 subjects while another teacher teaches the other 2, some schools have this routine while other schools do not. The standard subjects are Math, Science, Social Studies, and English language Arts. The school day usually ends around 2:45-3:00pm with an organized dismissal.

The type of teacher I want to be

The teacher I want to be is a person who will bring joy in my students' daily lives. I want school to be a fun and educational place for my future students, I intend for them to remember me forever. My students will feel comfortable confronting me with everything that is going on in their lives whether it is school related or not. I want to be a teacher who understands every single student that I come across and never make them feel bad about not understanding certain content. Unfortunately as a young student I had teachers who have done the opposite, which affected my self esteem. I want to have as much background knowledge as I possibly can to help relate the content to the real world.

Motto: “The influence of a good teacher shall never be erased”

Hello, Im Jueun!

Briefly describe American elementary education:

In the U.S., education is organized into the K-12 system, which is divided into three levels: elementary (K-5), middle (6-8), and high school (9-12).

K-5: Elementary school focuses on foundational learning in subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies, as well as developing social and emotional skills. Schools often use hands-on, project-based learning to engage students and foster creativity.

6-8: Middle school transitions students into more subject-specific learning with courses like history, literature, and introductory algebra, preparing them for higher-level critical thinking.

9-12: High school prepares students for college or careers, offering more advanced subjects such as calculus, biology, U.S. government, and sometimes vocational training.

In many schools, there is a growing emphasis on Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs, where students learn in both English and another language, such as Korean, Spanish, French, or Chinese. One teacher teaches math, science, and social studies in the target language, while another teaches in English. The school where I'm doing my practicum emphasizes project-based and inquiry-based learning, fostering creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

I want to be a teacher who nurtures every child's curiosity and passion for learning. My classroom will be a place where children feel safe, loved, and inspired to grow. I envision myself guiding students not just academically, but emotionally, fostering their unique talents and dreams. My goal is to bring joy to learning and help students discover their potential.

Quote: "Teach with love, lead with passion." (Inspired by Rita Pierson’s quote, 'Every child deserves a champion)

At Fayetteville Elementary, where I’m doing my practicum, I’ve seen how elementary schools in Georgia create safe and supportive spaces for students to grow. Class sizes are usually around 20-25 students, and classrooms are colorful and full of learning tools like books, posters, and technology. Teachers follow the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE), which set goals for subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies. Lessons often include hands-on activities, group work, and chances for students to explore real-world ideas. Schools also focus on social-emotional learning, teaching students how to work well with others and manage their emotions.

As a teacher, I want to build strong relationships with my students, so they feel important and capable. I will use hands-on lessons, real-world examples, and group activities to help students think critically and work together. I’ll follow the GSE to guide my students in math, reading, and science, while also making sure each child’s learning style is supported. My classroom will be full of resources like books, art supplies, and technology to make learning engaging and fun. I’ll also teach students that mistakes are okay, and that effort and persistence help them grow.

My goal is to help students become curious, confident learners who enjoy solving problems and working together, both in school and in life.

1. In Taiwan's elementary schools, first-grade and second-grade students are classified as "low grade", their school time is 8 a.m. to 12 o'clock(half day), and there is only one day they have to stay at school until 4 p.m. (full day). Third and fourth-grade students are classified as "middle-grade", they have three half-day school time and two full days. And last, fifth and sixth grade are classified as "high grade", they have only one half-day, usually on Wednesday, and the rest of the days are full.

In class, it's typically teacher-oriented, meaning that most of the time the teacher is delivering the lesson while students sit quietly and listen. But actually i think that is the problem of Taiwan's education. As students, we are required to stay quiet during class. Even if we have questions, we have to wait until the class is over to ask the teacher. This gradually discourages us from speaking up and participating actively in the lessons.

2.The teacher I want to be is both a friendly companion to students, approachable and warm like a friend, yet also carries the authority and professional that a teacher should have.

Each state sets its own curriculum standards, but common themes include critical thinking and social skills development. At Barnwell Elementary, where I do my practicum, the classrooms utilize diverse teaching strategies, such as hands-on activities, group activities, and technology integration to engage various learning styles. The system emphasizes inclusivity, providing support for students with different abilities through special education programs. Moreover, parental involvement is encouraged through events and conferences, fostering a strong home-school connection. Overall, the goal is to create a nurturing environment that prepares children for lifelong learning and success.

The image I chose shows an elementary teacher who is patient, adaptable, and engaging, which creates a supportive classroom where students thrive.

American education focuses on building both academic and social skills. This is my kindergarten class that I absolutely adore, and our mornings usually start off on a routine with a good morning video, a dancing song to get them up and moving and brighten their spirits for the rest of the day. There's a strong emphasis on literacy, with students learning letters, sounds, and sight words through reading and phonics activities. Math is taught hands on learning like using centers, counting shapes etc. Social studies and science are integrated into units with whole group discussions and projects that are sent home for them to complete and bring back to school. Beyond academics, Americans work to make sure that our students are considered "well rounded" so they also learn skills like communicating emotions, being a good citizen and following the law, etc. All county schools are built the exact same, they just have different names and they all operate on the same system.

As for the teacher that I want to be, my goal is to stay with the younger grades, I want to shape them into laying a foundation to help them become compassionate human beings. I want them to see what it's like to actually do something that you love, and I want them to leave my classroom everyday knowing that even if they may not have anyone at home that they feel like loves them, they know for sure Miss Cosby does! I want to be the kind of teacher that celebrates mistakes, creates a safe space full of happiness and inclusivity. Children are starting to go through so much at such a young age, in my classroom I want them to still be children.

My Motto that I live by: "my students may not be mine by birth, but they are mine by heart."

Taiwan elementary education looks like:

There are six grades in basic education in Taiwan. There are about 20 to 30 people in a class. Classes start at about 7:40, and each class lasts forty minutes. There is a ten-minute break between classes. Students will be at school at noon. After meals and lunch breaks, unless it is a half-day course, school ends at about 4 p.m. Taiwan also has compulsory courses such as Chinese language, mathematics, and social studies. In addition, in line with the new curriculum, there are also courses such as Taiwanese dialect and indigenous language. Teachers will also introduce some Taiwanese local culture and festivals in conjunction with the textbooks. Most of the classroom seats in Taiwan's primary schools face the blackboard. The traditional teaching method is taught by the teacher. There is rarely a teaching method of group cooperation. Unless the teacher wants to conduct competitions between groups or discuss and cooperate with each other in the classroom, students in Taiwan usually isten quietly and passively, and need to raise their hands before ask questions to the teacher. Students usually go to talent classes or day care classes to study or do homework after school, where they wait for their parents to pick them up from get off work, so they often go to exercise during after school hours to relieve stress. Teachers have close contact with parents, and most of them now use online groups to keep track of their children's performance in school.

The elementary teacher I want to be:

I want to be a teacher that children can trust and make them feel that learning is an interesting and meaningful thing. At the same time, I will pay attention to my own behavior and words, because younger students usually imitate the adults around them, so they must be given a good example. With students from different backgrounds and interests, I want to encourage them to explore more of themselves and realize their potential. I will also continue to learn different teaching methods and how to effectively manage the class, and continue to improve my abilities to adapt to changes in future. At the same time, I want to build relationships with parents and witness their children's growth together.

Motto:“The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

—William Arthur Ward

Hello❕I’m Aruei (林詩芮)❕

—

Taiwan elementary education resembles a relatively free military camp. I compare it to a military camp because students tend to do whatever their teacher says. Although they may occasionally murmur or complain, they ultimately comply with what the teacher says. And why I consider it a “relatively free” because there are few rules, aside from those related to classes and studying. During after-class time, students can play whatever game or amusement equipment they want (as long as safety is maintained). Teachers can be seen as their close friends and play together . Unless an incident occurs or circumstances prevent it, elementary education in Taiwan is actually quite liberating for students.”（This picture is of a elementary school classroom in Taiwan.）

—

👩‍🏫 I want to be a teacher whose students enjoy taking my classes. And I’m the teacher who is humorous, energetic, yet knowledgeable. I want my students to see me as a friend and feel comfortable sharing their ideas with me. I hope they will love learning because they enjoy my classes.

—

✨ My motto is “If you can't do it, work harder. Be the Superwoman of your own world.”

Hi guys ! I’m Rita(林郁婷).

1️⃣ I want to compare elementary education in American/Taiwan to two different gardens.

Taiwan elementary education is like a carefully planned garden, emphasizing the solid mastery of basic knowledge. The curriculum design is relatively consistent, and the content and progress of learning are usually measured by standardized examinations, just like trimmed flowers and trees. However, elementary education in Taiwan has also begun to slowly shift to diversified development, allowing students to choose according to their personal interests.

Although I have not actually participated in American elementary education, many introductions make me feel that American elementary education is more like an open grassland. Students have more free choices and diversified learning paths. Pay attention to students' creativity, just like letting plants grow freely and exploring their own direction.

2️⃣ I want to be a teacher who is enthusiastic, energetic and can really give things to students. I get along well with the students, and they also like the way and atmosphere of my class. During the class, students can also answer questions happily and actively. This is what I hope I can be.

🍒My motto is .:· The future belongs to those who believe in their dreams.* .:*·🍒

Hi! I am Heal long time no see😎One of the most inspiring mottos to me is a quote from the former President of the Republic of China: "If you don’t do it today, you’ll regret it tomorrow."

I want to be a teacher who makes kids fall in love with learning and never feel like school is painful. I hope my students can genuinely enjoy coming to school, not dreading classes or studying. No matter their background, cultural experiences, or financial situation, I want them to gain something valuable in my classroom.

My biggest goal is to become the kind of teacher who, even ten or twenty years from now, students remember as someone who had a positive impact on their lives. I hope they think of me as a good teacher, someone who taught them not just academics, but also how to be good people. I want to help guide them in the right direction, keeping them from going off course—and even if they do stray, I want to be the person who helps them get back on track.

Ultimately, I want to see all my students succeed—not just in terms of social status or wealth, but in developing the skills to achieve their dreams and live fulfilling lives, both mentally and physically. If I can accomplish that, I’ll feel like I’ve lived a meaningful life as a teacher. I also hope that while my students like me, they’ll respect me as well.

Observation Summary from Elementary School Internship in Taiwan from my record.1-In Taiwanese classrooms, teachers frequently use motivational phrases such as "If we finish the lesson, you can do your homework early" to keep students engaged. They also integrate games and reward systems like end-of-semester raffles to maintain student enthusiasm.2-Taiwanese teachers emphasize discipline and collective living. For instance, they often say, "Do the right thing at the right time" and expect students to stay quiet during study time. This helps students learn to follow rules in a structured environment.3-During my internship, I observed how teachers handled students with special needs, such as those with Asperger’s Syndrome, with great patience. They used indirect guidance and assigned small tasks to help these students feel included in class activities.4-During my internship, I was once asked to teach a social studies class unexpectedly. I had to improvise based on the textbook and adjust my teaching on the spot according to student feedback. This experience greatly enhanced my ability to think on my feet.5-In Taiwan, teachers tend to communicate tactfully with parents, avoiding direct criticism of students' behavior. They mentioned that handling sensitive issues delicately is essential to maintain good parent-teacher relationships.

Hi everyone ! I’m Dora（廖婕羽）.

📌Taiwan elementary education ...

Taiwan’s education system is like a straight highway, where students follow a predetermined path with clear guidelines such as curricula, exams, and assessments. As students progress, the road becomes narrower and more pressured, with the university entrance exam as the ultimate goal. High achievers race ahead like sports cars, while slower learners may feel stuck in traffic, struggling to keep up.

While this system efficiently prepares students for exams, it often overlooks individual interests and learning diversity. Students have few chances to explore other passions, as the focus remains on academic success. This structure can produce strong test-takers, but it may limit opportunities for self-discovery and personal growth.

📌The elementary teacher I want to be in an image ...

I want to be a positive teacher, allowing students to feel happy during the learning process while guiding them step by step to become self-motivated.

Hi, I'm Gin(陳亮均) from NTUE. It's so nice to talk with you since we shared our self introduction a month ago.

I aspire to become a teacher who can inspire students to unleash their creativity and imagination. Currently, Taiwan's education system tends to focus more on exams to determine future development. I believe there's nothing wrong with that, as foundational education helps students build a solid knowledge base, enabling them to construct tall and stable "buildings" in the future. However, I hope that within this context, I can stimulate students' creativity and imagination through appropriate teaching methods and curriculum design. I wish to teach in an interactive classroom, incorporating more discussions and communication into the original curriculum. This way, students can not only share their own opinions but also listen to others' ideas. Throughout this process, I play a guiding role, helping students construct knowledge and learn new things through discussions.

And here is a quote that touched me a lot:
“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.”- Malala Yousafzai
「一個小孩、一位老師、一本書、一支筆，就能改變世界。」--馬拉拉·尤沙夫賽

In my school, students are always busy. The standards are introduced and then exited within a week, so there's a constant rush to keep up. Because we have so many things to get done during the school day, there’s hardly any time for play or talking in the classroom. It feels like we're always moving from one thing to the next, and the pace makes it tough to slow down and let the kids explore or connect with each other. The teachers in my classroom, including myself, are feeling stressed out from trying to stay on top of everything.

The teacher I want to be is someone who creates a warm, welcoming, and engaging classroom where every student feels valued and encouraged to explore their curiosity. I want to foster an environment where creativity thrives, allowing students to learn through discovery and hands-on experiences. I will balance academic rigor with moments of joy, play, and conversation, understanding that these elements are just as important for a child's growth. My goal is to support each student not only academically but also emotionally, helping them build confidence and develop social skills. Ultimately, I want to be the kind of teacher who inspires a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

The grades that are at this school at pre-K through fifth grade. Students are welcome to come to school early to have breakfast. The students then go to their homeroom and their school day starts. For the 4th grade elementary classroom that I am in the schedule is science, math, specials(writing, music,P.E, library), intervention block, Recess, Lunch, ELA, social studies, and then dismissal. The classrooms are decorated with school related posters, inspirational quotes, other decorations of the teacher's choosing. Depending on what subjects the teacher teaches they may have a book corner, science related things, math related things or social studies related things in their classrooms. The curriculum is based on the common core state standards.

I want to be a teacher who makes students excited to come to school and learn. I want to be a warm and welcoming teacher with which students feel at ease. Because I want my classroom to be a place where students feel comfortable and encouraged to learn. It's important that students feel like they can talk to you about anything. I want my students to be confident and know they are capable of doing anything. So I want to be able to make them feel empowered in their learning and everything else. Another goal is to be able to create a positive environment in my classroom.

I am Cindy(陳心語).

📌Comparison of Elementary Education in Taiwan and the United States

In terms of academics, elementary school students in Taiwan primarily focus on fundamental subjects such as Chinese, Math, and English. The academic environment is competitive, with less emphasis on developing interests outside of core subjects. If students wish to participate in extracurricular clubs, they must join on their own initiative.

The possibility of students engaging in diverse learning activities is heavily influenced by factors like family background, economic conditions, and the urban-rural divide, leading to significant disparities in opportunities for broader learning experiences.

On an emotional level, I find that Taiwanese elementary schools are like a second home for students, with teachers acting as a second father or mother. Teachers are expected to provide comprehensive care for students, including attending to their dietary needs, clothing, safety, and behavior. If any issues arise, such as injuries from falls or incidents of bullying, parents are likely to blame the teacher, believing that the problem stems from poor classroom management.

💗I aspire to be a teacher who accompanies students in their learning journey.

In a classroom, there are varying levels of learning ability among students. I want to be a teacher who "grows alongside the children." Every child has different strengths, and I want to help them find their own value. With patience and care, I will not easily give up on any student. I believe that "the light in a student's eyes is the value of a teacher's existence."

💫My motto is: The light in a student's eyes is the value of a teacher's existence.

Elementary school in general

The characteristics of education in Taiwan are quite distinctive. In elementary school, great emphasis is placed on developing students' basic skills, such as writing, mathematics, and logic. A significant amount of time is spent on these fundamentals, and students are often given large amounts of homework to reinforce them. As a result, other areas of learning tend to receive less focus, though there are ongoing efforts to improve in subjects like native language courses, life education, and information technology.

Experimental education schools

In addition to regular elementary schools, more and more experimental education schools are emerging in Taiwan. These schools aim to cultivate students' abilities beyond traditional academic subjects through self-directed learning, thematic teaching, and school-wide activities. From my observations of an experimental elementary school, these approaches make learning more enriching and enjoyable for students. However, they may be less focused on basic skills like writing and arithmetic compared to traditional schools.

Textbook design

In Taiwan, textbooks must be approved by the government, which means the ruling government often adjusts the curriculum based on the current social and political climate. For instance, with the current tension between Taiwan and China, educational content is increasingly inclined towards a Taiwan-centric perspective, reducing the emphasis on Chinese culture. One recent example is the debate over whether to continue teaching Classical Chinese, as it's seen as a product of Chinese history. The Taiwanese government has expressed a desire to reduce its prominence in favor of focusing on local Taiwanese literature.

THE TEACHER I WANT TO BE:

I want to become a teacher that students genuinely love, someone who can help them in every way—whether it’s with schoolwork or life in general. I also hope to design fun and engaging lessons that make learning enjoyable. Plus, I want to get really good at using different tools to enhance my teaching, like games, hands-on activities, and more!

My motto is: "Don’t pass the hardships and losses you've experienced to the next generation. Do your best to become the person you aspire to be."

In Taiwan, elementary school teachers pay great attention to guiding students through the details of both their learning and daily life, especially in the first grade. For example, during my previous observation at an elementary school, I noticed that the teacher taught first-grade students how to organize their personal belongings and reminded them to sit quietly at their desks during class. The teacher used e-books and videos as teaching tools and frequently repeated basic concepts until all the students had memorized them.

I hope to become a kind and professional teacher, one who can teach students not only fundamental academic knowledge but also how to interact with others. My goal is to help students enjoy school while learning what they need to know. As the quote by William Butler Yeats says, "Education is not just the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." I believe that education is about inspiring curiosity and encouraging students to think independently. Through my teaching, I hope to ignite a passion for learning in my students and help them grow not only academically, but also as individuals.

In most schools here in Macau, students arrive between 7:00 and 8:15 in the morning. They attend a morning assembly, where all students gather in the playground to listen to announcements from the principal. These announcements may include congratulating students who performed well in competitions, reminding everyone to keep the school clean, and other important updates. After the assembly, students return to their classrooms to submit their homework to the teacher. Once all the homework has been submitted, the teacher begins the lesson. The main subjects taught include Mathematics, Chinese, and English. School days usually end between 3:30 and 4:20 in the afternoon.

The type of teacher I want to be

I believe that education should be more than just memorizing facts or passing exams. It should inspire curiosity and help students find meaning in what they are learning. When students understand why they need to study, and can see how it relates to their lives and futures, learning becomes much more enjoyable and fulfilling. I want my classroom to be a place where students are excited to learn, where they can laugh and feel comfortable asking questions. By making lessons fun and relevant, I hope to help my students see the value of education and feel empowered by what they learn. This is the kind of teacher I strive to be—a guide who makes learning an exciting journey, rather than a burden.

1.During the summer break, I interned for a week at the elementary school I once attended, where I observed the following. First, regarding teaching equipment, they now use electronic whiteboards for lessons. The teachers often adopt a “questioning” approach and have students work in groups for discussions, which promotes more interaction between the teacher and students, as well as among peers. Secondly, there is now a course in elementary schools that I didn’t experience before, called “Reading.” The school provides books periodically for students to read, and in this course, teachers and students can discuss the content of the books, or students can share their reading insights, helping to foster a reading culture in the school. Lastly, I found the language course particularly interesting, which we call “Local Language Course.” Taiwan is a place rich in cultural diversity, including Han Chinese, indigenous peoples, and new immigrants. To preserve the languages of these different cultures, the school offers local language courses for students to choose from. However, one downside is that the number of these classes is quite limited, so the impact might not be very noticeable.

2.I am a shy person, but I truly long to have the courage to ask questions or speak up in class. Therefore, I aspire to become a teacher who encourages everyone to express themselves bravely. At the same time, I hope to genuinely embrace diverse voices. Through an image, I want to convey a joyful classroom atmosphere filled with active participation. The use of different colors symbolizes diversity, representing the variety of ideas that students bring.

My sixth-grade teacher once said that whenever he introduces his profession to others, he says, "I educate people." This statement made me deeply realize that being a teacher is not merely about imparting knowledge to students but also about nurturing them to become individuals with strong moral character.

What Taiwan elementary education looks like:

In Taiwan, modern compulsory education requires children to attend elementary school as their first formal learning stage, although many go to kindergarten beforehand. Typically, elementary school is their first official exposure to structured curriculum. These days, a typical class size is around 20-23 students. In the first and second grades, students attend half-day classes. As they grow up, their school days gradually become longer.

In terms of the curriculum, aside from traditional subjects like Chinese, English, math, science, and social studies, schools have the flexibility to design their own school-based programs. For example, at my elementary school, because it is located near a river, we had a special program focused on the local water system and ecosystem.

The teacher I want to be:

I aspire to be a supportive and guiding presence for my students. I want to create a positive environment where students feel safe and encouraged. I would teach with enthusiasm and genuine care for each individual, while also being open to learning from my students and embracing feedback. My goal is to help my students build confidence and ensure they feel supported in their learning journey.

A motto I am inspired by:

"The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery." – Mark Van Doren

Hello! I’m Lesley.（林品慈）

🔖Taiwan elementary education

This summer, I completed my one-week practicum at an experimental elementary school, which differs significantly from traditional elementary school systems. I believe the most notable difference lies in the duration of lessons. In a standard elementary school, a lesson lasts 40 minutes, followed by a 10-minute break. In contrast, at the experimental elementary school, lessons are 80 minutes long with a 30-minute break.

Based on my practicum experience, I can share insights about Taiwan's experimental education. In this setting, teachers tend to prioritize student-centered learning. With smaller class sizes, students have more opportunities to engage and participate. Moreover, the curriculum in experimental education is not confined to the classroom; teaching can occur anywhere on campus or even outside of it. Some classes also feature co-teaching, where multiple teachers collaborate on lesson planning and instruction, unlike in traditional elementary schools, where typically one teacher is assigned to a single class of students.

🔖 The elementary teacher I want to be in an image.

I aspire to be a warm and principled teacher who can guide students to explore a wide range of knowledge—not just what is found in textbooks, but also lessons from life, emotional growth, and the natural world.

🔖A quote that inspired me

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” - Phil Collins

Jeffrey Sun 孫傳庭

Taiwan's basic education consists of six years of elementary school and three years of junior high school, which are part of the mandatory education system. Schools typically run from 8 AM to 4 PM, with a curriculum that includes Mandarin, mathematics, science, social studies, English, and physical education. The teaching style tends to be traditional, but many schools are now adopting innovative methods. For instance, the school where I did my internship incorporates outdoor learning and project-based courses to encourage students' self-directed learning and interest development.

My Image as an Elementary School Teacher:
I aspire to be a teacher like Mr. Keating from Dead Poets Society, encouraging students to break out of conventional molds and explore their creativity and interests. I want to inspire students with passion and sincerity, making them feel joyful and confident in their learning. At the same time, I aim to respect each student's uniqueness and help them find their own voice.

Motto: We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.

I observe and experience primary education, and I think I really like it. My own primary teachers were very friendly and patient; they taught us important values and knowledge. In my area, primary classes typically have around 20 students, which allows the teacher to pay more attention to each student. I believe our primary education is quite valuable, teaching children both life skills and scientific knowledge. We also had art classes and fun equipment for children to use. For me, primary school was the most carefree stage, where I could happily learn and grow.
As for the kind of teacher I want to be, I hope to pay close attention to each child's well-being, offering timely care and advice. I remember when my teacher showed concern for me, taking the time to talk and even bringing me to the counseling room. I also want to be a respected teacher—friendly with my students, but also able to maintain order. I hope my students will understand when it’s time to play and when it’s time to be serious. Additionally, I want to help all children keep up with their studies. I know how it feels to struggle and lose interest, so I hope I can inspire my students to stay engaged and not give up. Ultimately, I want to be a teacher who earns the trust of both the school and the parents, someone they can rely on. I hope I can follow this path into education.

Teacher I want to be:

I want to be the kind of teacher who makes every student feel welcome and that they are a valued part of our classroom community. I believe the most effective teaching methods involve activities that incorporate physical movement, such as art or movement-based learning. For literacy and writing, it's essential that my students see themselves represented in the books we read and feel engaged by topics that reflect their lives and experiences. I see myself as a positive, communicative, welcoming partner to students' families, working together to support their children’s educational journey. Creativity is crucial, especially at the young age I wish to teach, and I hope to inspire my students to dream, explore, and think beyond the classroom. By building a strong sense of community, I aim to prevent many challenges, though I also handle conflicts fairly, giving clear warnings and consequences when necessary. I believe in generously rewarding students who model excellent behavior and dedication to learning, and I ultimately want to help them grow into well-rounded, self-confident individuals who show empathy and kindness toward others.

Day in the Life of a Kindergartener:

8:15a Bell Rings/School Starts

8:30 Community Building time

8:40 – 9:20 English/Literacy

9:20 – 9:55 Math

9:55 – 10:30 Recess

10:50 - 11:30 Lunch

11:35 Discovery (these are elective classes like music, art, theater, computer, STEAM, Spanish, PE/Physical Education, Robotics, and they are visited on a rotational basis)

12:40 – 1:20 Social Studies/Science (these are alternated each day)

1:45 – 2:00 Snack

2:00 – 2:30 Centers (reading, art, computer, tablets, building center)

2:30 Pack up and dismissal

School System: In the United States there are 13 years of basic education, schooling begins with elementary education (kindergarten through 5th grade) followed by middle school (6th through 8th grade), and high school (9th through 12th grade).

The elementary education system in American consists of grades from kindergarten to fifth grade, ages 4-11. The typical school day is around 6 hours a day at the school I am currently at. The teachers follow a list of curriculum and standards that they try to meet by the end of the school year. The school year typically starts in August and ends in May. The main subjects taught at the school I am currently at includes, math, science, social studies, and language arts. They also have specials that include, physical education, Spanish, media (library), art, and music.

As a first generation student, I hope to become a teacher that students will never forget. I hope to create a fun and safe learning environment where everyone is valued and given the resources needed to grow. I would love to create a strong relationship with my students outside the classroom. My goal is to get to know each of my students as an individual and their cultural background. As educators, we play a major role in their lives and I want to be as influential as I could be. I want to be more than a teacher. I want to be a mentor, a counselor, and a friend.

Motto: It is not what is poured into the student but what is planted that counts. - E.T Bertin

The schools in Georgia focus on teaching basic subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies. Students also take classes like art, music, STEM, drama, and gym to stay well-rounded. Each class usually has one main teacher, with other staff helping students who need extra support, like counselors or special education teachers like speech and English language learners. The student's learning environment is a mix of lessons from the teacher, working together in groups, and fun, hands-on activities and integration of art. Technology, like computers and smartboards, is used to make lessons more interactive, too.

Schools in Georgia try to include everyone, offering help for students with different needs, like advanced learners or those still learning English. Sometimes, parents are involved, often volunteering at the school to help the teachers. Like any public school, there is always a focus on testing to ensure students are learning and improving.

As a teacher, I want to create a creative, fun, but calming environment where the students can feel excited to learn. I want to be the teacher where the students enjoy coming to class and can tell me about their day. A lot of students just need someone to listen, and I want to be that person for them. I want to help them not just academically but emotionally. Creating that teacher and student relationship allows the student to feel comfortable and actually want to try to learn academically. My motto is "Learn, Play, Create – Where Every Day is an Adventure!" Learning should be fun and interactive, so as a teacher, I want to create that where we work together and it's more student-based learning.

Taiwan education:

In Taiwan, elementary schools are divided into six grades: first and second grades are considered "lower grades," third and fourth grades are "middle grades," and fifth and sixth grades are "higher grades." In the lower grades, the main subjects are Chinese, mathematics, and English, and as students progress, additional subjects like social studies, life skills, and natural sciences are gradually introduced. The typical school hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with lower grade students only having full-day classes on Tuesdays (at my previous school), while middle grades students have two full days and two half days, and higher grade students attend full days.

Exams are divided into midterms and finals, and each subject teacher may also give quizzes for students to review. Lunchtime is from 11:50 AM to 12:30 PM, with meals provided through a wholesale vendor that supplies various schools. There is a half-hour nap time from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM. In terms of environment, most elementary school campuses in Taiwan are not very large, but they have basic facilities like a sports field and playground equipment, making them compact yet well-equipped.

The teacher I want to be:

If I become a teacher in the future, I hope to be an empathetic one, capable of caring for my students' emotions. At times, I want to be a strong support for them, serving as a good mentor and friend as they grow and face challenges.

In school, we can feel a slight pressure in our studies, because teachers are very demanding about the completeness of homework, and the school also hopes that we can participate in many competitions to maintain the quality of the school.

2.I hope I can become a warm and fair teacher. During an internship, I found that students are very willing to share their lives and difficulties and disputes with teachers. Teachers will also share their lives with students. When students When encountering difficulties, teachers can provide opinions to students as an impartial third party and believe that students can do it. I think this kind of trusting teacher-student relationship can make school life better, and I hope to become such a teacher in the future.

In traditional American elementary schools, my school was divided into a primary section and elementary section. Pre-k-2nd grade were on the primary side and 3rd-5th grade was on the elementary side. School for each grade lasts from 730-3:00 Monday-Friday. Teachers used lots of manipulatives to teach math. However, for social studies we learned mostly from textbooks/workbooks where we only learned certain things. We had at least 1 hr for each subject Science, Math, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing and then we would have to do a connection every day that was different which consisted of music, p.e, technology, health, and art. We would have outside time and then by 230 pack up. However, sports were not big in elementary education except for in p.e it was all about being healthy so we would have to do recreation sports which was outside of school time.

As a future teacher, I want my students to be comfortable in asking me questions and I want our class to be a safe space for all. In my class, the students will be the guide just as much as the teacher because we all can learn from each other which is why I chose to have the students surround me on the rug so we can discuss as a whole meaningful strategies and topics in the class that will serve as a purpose.

Motto: I make mistakes so I can learn. I learn so I can succeed. I succeed so I can help other kids when I grow up.

The elementary school provides free breakfast for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status. After breakfast, students are released to their homerooms around 7:30 a.m. In my classroom, where I am completing my student teaching, we greet the students with jazz music, smiles, high fives, hugs, and more as they enter. Students sign in, unpack their backpacks, and begin working on the Morning Message. This message varies, often including self-affirmations and information about the previous day's lesson.

Afterward, the pace picks up as we go through Calendar Math, Reading, Writing, Lunch, Recess or Specials (on Thursdays, the students attend a combined Special), and then Social Studies.

In American elementary schools, there are six levels of schooling referred to as "grades," with the exception of the beginning level, Kindergarten. Kindergarten is a German word translating to "garden of children," which was a term coined by the founder, Froebel, who believed children should be nurtured like a garden.

Kindergarten begins around the age of 5. Each school year lasts 180 days, beginning in early August and ending in late May (this time frame varies depending on where you are in the United States, but this is typical for Georgia schools). After Kindergarten, there are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. 5th graders are around the age of 10-11, so the American elementary school age range is about 5-11 years old.

In my experience, I was taught all subjects (reading, math, science, and social studies) within one classroom by one teacher for most of elementary school. However, when I reached 4th grade, our school decided to departmentalize. This meant each instructor would focus on one subject and the students would travel from classroom to classroom to learn each subject. This is normal for many American schools, as well as remaining in one classroom.

Students are allowed 30 minutes for lunch, 20 minutes for recess, and 45 minutes for "Specials" class, which changes daily. Specials classes include music, art, physical education, computers/keyboarding, and more. The typical school day runs from about 7:15 am to 2:30 pm; instruction normally begins around 8:00 am. In my area, students have the option of walking home as well as riding the bus and having someone come and pick them up. Most of my students are part of the After School Program, where they remain at the school until around 6:00 when their parents normally get off work.

I want to be an inspiring teacher who always puts the priority of her students’ education first. My goal is to create a nurturing and inclusive classroom environment where every child feels valued and motivated to learn. In my current kindergarten placement, I’ve seen how important it is to structure the day with simplicity and consistency. The classroom is set up in groups with about 5 to 6 students at each table. Each kindergarten classroom has 20-25 students. I’m learning that with the “babies,” keeping things simple and routine helps them absorb and retain the information being taught. I plan to incorporate clear, structured routines in my future classroom to provide a sense of security and predictability for my students. I will focus on meeting students where they are, making learning accessible and engaging for all. By building positive relationships and understanding each child’s unique needs, I will ensure every student is supported. Ultimately, I want to help students develop a love for learning that will carry them beyond the classroom. My image is created with AI, I wanted to include my name with the grade I plan to start teaching and students with inspiring looks in their eyes.

My Teacher Motto: “Inspire curiosity, nurture growth, and empower every student to succeed.” This emphasizes the role of a teacher in fostering learning, personal development, and creating an environment where every student can thrive.

In American elementary schools you have kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, and lastly 5th grade. In the morning, students usually eat whatever breakfast. They can bring their breakfast from home, or they can get some from the cafeteria. From here students start their day; their first subject can depend, but from what I have seen math is usually first. So they have math, English, social studies, science, and some kinds of specials. The specials that they chose from are music, art, gym, or STEM. I am currently a student teaching in a kindergarten class, so there are two teachers. You have the main teacher and then you have a paraprofessional. A paraprofessional is basically just a second teacher, so the main teacher does not get overwhelmed. Once the day is done, the kids just go home; sometimes a kid may be afterschool.

I want to be a teacher that kids want to go to, even after they graduate from my class. To do that I have to be a caring teacher who cares for students' education, and also their wellbeing outside of class. As a teacher, I want to build an actual relationship with the students so they can have someone on campus that cares for them. Lastly, as a teacher I want to make it so that the kids have fun learning, and don’t feel like they are forced to learn something that does not interest them.

Motto: Don’t let roadblocks be a reason you stop trying.

1."When I was in elementary school, my teachers, including the principal, were very strict about discipline. Every day, I had to present myself neatly and tidily. This meant adhering to a specific dress code that required us to wear our uniforms properly. My hairstyle also had to be short, with the length strictly enforced to ensure it didn’t go beyond two inches past my ears. Additionally, every Friday, we had a quiz, which meant I had to prepare throughout the week. While it sometimes felt overwhelming, these rules taught me the importance of responsibility and organization."

2.

In my heart, I want to become a humorous and fun teacher. I believe that wrapping difficult subjects in humor makes the content easier for students to understand and sparks their motivation to learn, so they don’t give up right from the start. Of course, I also hope to be the kind of teacher who helps students develop independent thinking. A lot of students, even now, just passively absorb what teachers tell them without thinking critically or connecting the knowledge on their own—and I think teachers bear some responsibility for that. While it’s easier for teachers when students can consistently achieve good grades, I’d rather have students who think for themselves, know what they want, and discover their own interests. That’s what makes being a teacher both exciting and challenging.

Teachers work hard to plan and implement diverse and effective courses for students. They are also committed to becoming students' life role models and cultivating students' good living habits. The teachers I train with have influenced me. The most profound words are: "The methods of well-known educators and the theories in books have little influence on me. For me, the most important thing is to teach students by example." Programs are set in place for students who need extra support with a specific subject. ESOL is a program that assists bilingual English learners in their education.

I want to be the teacher that students can trust and respect. I get to see my mentor teachers collaborate and differentiate their instruction to ensure that every student meets and exceeds their goals in the classroom. Other times we work in whole group and allow many times for students to collaborate and to have fun.

The teacher I want to be will work collaboratively with my other teachers to meet the needs of the students.

NTUE

Hello! This is Evelyn （福美人）and I hope you’re doing well，

Suppose I were to compare my experience from elementary and high school. In that case, I’d say that it made me see a bigger picture of how my country’s education curriculum was not consistent in all schools suitable for their students. When I was in grade 7, in history class, we learned about the history of the Mongolian Empire. I transferred schools in grade 8 and realized that one of their grade 8 history lessons was the same as my grade 7 curriculum in history class. Their Science and Math lessons were also the same topics I had already learned in grade 7. With this, I found the curriculum at my new school more aligned with my understanding and learning challenges, particularly in Math and Science. My high school made an effort to support students who were struggling by offering consultations, while still maintaining high standards for everyone in academics and extracurricular activities, which I had never witnessed during my elementary years. I strongly believe that schools should implement a standardized curriculum that not only challenges students to improve but also recognizes their individual strengths and talents. Also establishing small communities that celebrate creativity and hard work in students’ areas of expertise would further motivate them to excel. In conclusion, I aspire to be the kind of teacher who helps students thrive academically and feel comfortable seeking support, while upholding high standards to encourage their overall growth and achievement.

Quotation

“Practice makes you better, not perfect” - My high school chemistry teacher
