A young painter named Basil had taken a portrait of a young man named Dorian Gray who was easily manipulated by others like Lord Wotton. After Dorian wishes for beauty and youth he gets his wish and follows a life of pleasure and sin that Wotton encourages. Each day he remains beautiful while the portrait ages and his sins show up on picture. After the love of his life dies and he commits many murders he realizes the problem with beauty is that he will never be happy. So he tries to kill himself with a knife but can't so he stabs the picture leading to his death. When he dies all the sin and how he ages transfers back to his body making the portrait beautiful again like when it was first painted.

Like Dr. Faustus, each of the men desired things they couldn't have. Because of their desperation they were both willing to sell their soul to the devil for beauty and knowledge. This was their downfall leading them to have unhappy lives when they realize that they truly aren't happy for what they wished for. Each man had a little helper to commit the evil deeds that they committed like Lord Wotton and Mesphist who encourage the sin that the men did that helped them realized how unhappy they were with their lives before they arrived.

Dr. Faustus was unhappy with the amount of knowledge he did know because he wished to know more. So he turned to the devil to get more knowledge. His request was answered by the devil by sending him a demon named Mephistophilis. He learns information from the Mesphist and enjoys his powers that he has. He uses it to impress the higher up people in society for enjoyment until his time comes. Many times he thought of repenting to save his soul but he didn't so that's why he wished to God to save his life so that he would only be forced to live 1000 years in hell instead of all of eternity.

Tom and Dorian were both very similar stories for selling their souls to the devil. They each wished for a better life than they had letting themselves get tricked by the devil to get the dream life they both wanted. Life was good until they realized that their time had come whether it be from stabbing a portrait or getting taken on a horse that they learn how terrible the deal was that they made with their soul.

Both men in this case were greedy for the knowledge and money but hated their consequences. Tom knew that he had some boundaries that couldn't be pushed for the money, but his soul wasn't one of them. He tried to become a good man by going to church but that didn't save him since he still choose to do the devil working for the money he desired. Faustus also thought that repenting would be the best choice but he made the deal and couldn't go back so he asked God to let him be there for 1000 years instead of eternity in hell. They knew the consequences of the their actions and thought they could get escape the bargain they made. ut they learned that it would have been better to never sell their soul in the first place.
