This highlights this overarching theme of dreams / expectations vs reality. The author's use of words in the simile, such as "blooming onions" shows a deliberate contrast. They have moved from a beautiful natural setting of Matheran, to an unnatural setting within an overpopulated city with an unhygenic environment. The point of the simile is to CONTRAST how different their experience is now, how ironic it is that this is not what they had expected in the allure / promise of the big city dreams of Mumbai. To "bloom" is to prosper, but this word is used with a negative connotation here, "a field of blooming onions" is used with a negative tone to exaggerate the extent of the smell, like rotting vegetables.
