to draw the reader's attention to the realities of living in the city. This highlights this overarching theme of dreams / expectations vs reality. The family moved to the city with the hope of a better future and improved opportunities for themselves, but, in reality they find themselves in a limiting living situation where it is not even pleasant to go outside. The author's use of words in the simile, such as "blooming onions" shows a deliberate contrast. They have moved from a beautiful natural setting of Matheran, to an unnatural setting within an overpopulated city with an unhygenic environment. The point of the simile is to CONTRAST how different their experience is now, how ironic it is that this is not what they had expected in the allure / promise of the big city dreams of Mumbai. To "bloom" is to prosper, but this word is used with a negative connotation here, "a field of blooming onions" is used with a negative tone to exaggerate the extent of the smell, like rotting vegetables. This does not foreshadow a positive future for the family at this early point of their arrival in the city and the author is introducing the readers to ominous environment that the family will have to navigate, foreshadowing uncertain future conflicts that face them at this juncture.

The Hope and Dreams are displayed when Gopal mentions that there he is losing HOPE, and how he knows there is less and less chance of him seeing Baba again. That knowledge is the reality, which followed by despair.

Kashmira Sheth has used this quote in order to imply the hopelesness Gopal feels inside himself. By highighting the upcoming sunset, the author is implying Gopal's loss of the last bit of hope "light". The author also wants to highlight the contrast between the Gopal's life a few days prior, and Gopal's current situation. The author wants to illustrate Gopal's longing for nature and his home, as well as for a place to dream. The mentioning of the tree is symbolical, as Gopal used to sit on a nimba tree to dream. Now, Gopal's child labour is imposing a wall between him and his dreams. Overall, the author wants to show hopelesness and longing in this quote.

What the author was trying to show to us was how thirsty Gopal was. Instantly when I read " dryed lips" I saw that Gopal was thirsty because when you don't drink water for a while your lips starts to get dry. But the author needed to show a way that his lips were dry, so he added " scaly tongue touching my dryed lips." The Author was trying to show how Gopal was feeling that created a certain mood that filled the Atmosphere. If you didn't listen to Ms Morris and don't know what is a atmosphere, well I tell you. A atmosphere is the feeling or sense evoked by an environment or setting.
