The purpose of education has evolved over time from slightly depending on whether the point of view of society, the educator, or the parents. The content of the curriculum in public schools changed dramatically during the decade. Progressive-minded educators focus more on a student's emotional, physical, and mental development, at the expense of developing such basic skills as reading, writing, and mathematics.

Atticus Finch is portrayed as a well educated man by his excellent morals and how he is able to conduct himself. Atticus and the “educated man” are both the ideal and perfect members of a community and family. He prepares his children for the future by making them aware of the cruelty of society. Not only does Atticus's honesty make his children more aware, it also teaches them to accept others. Equality is very important to Atticus's beliefs, so he wants to teach his children to accept everyone the way they are.

Miss Caroline believes that all education has to be taught the right way in order to keep the kids from being corrupt. She tells Scout to tell her father not to teach her anymore because it would interfere with her reading and that she has to make progress just like everyone else who are not literate. As a result she punished her for having an opinion as well as ability to read and told her to stand in the corner. By contrast, Caroline deals with people according to a rigid set of rules. Rather than adjust her teaching style to fit Scout's advanced reading, she instead condemns it and insists Scout learn the same way as her classmates.
