It also discusses how it sorts its people before they are even born and how it will augment the lower intelligence people to stay compliant like sheep. On page 7, they talk about the dividing of the people and how they make sure to make the lower class people essentially less intelligent to maintain "happiness" among that group of people. The basic cost of happiness shown in this chapter is your free will. The author writes, "Two, four, eight, the buds in their turn budded; and having budded were dosed almost to death with alcohol; consequently burgeoned again and having budded- bud out of bud out of bud- were thereafter- further arrest being generally fatal- left to develop in peace," (Huxley, 6-7). Before analyzing how chapter 1 contains themes of industrialism and consumption, it is important to know what these themes actually are. Industrialism is the rapid and extensive reorganization of a society (typically an agrarian one) that is typically built on the success of large-scale manufacturing industries. Consumption is the concept that people will use their resources to satisfy their needs and wants. 
In chapter 1, the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning gives students a tour of the center where all humans are made. The principle of mass production in industrialism is mentioned several times by the Director. He explains Bokanovsky's Process, which is used to ensure that humans are produced in large quantities at a time. He says, "Bokanovsky's Process is one of the major instruments of social stability," (Huxley, 7). This statement shows that people are seen as cogs in the machine of the World State, not sentient beings. All of them serve a purpose to society and, to the Director, as something meant to be mass-produced. Knowing this, it is clear how integral industrialism is in the World State. 
In addition to this, consumption is heavily encouraged in the World State. The caste system predestines every individual to a specific fate. Citizens are essentially created to serve their society, which conditions them to consume mindlessly and indefinitely. The Director tells the students, "...that is the secret of happiness and virtue--liking what you've got to do. All conditioning aims at that: making people like their unescapable social destiny," (Huxley, 16). By conditioning all members of society to like the role they play in the caste system, they will keep working for the World State's industrial system. The dystopian societal structure of the World State completely eliminates any possibility of free human will, freedom, and self-determination. All humans are created in the Hatchery and Conditioning Center, predetermined to a fate that they cannot control or change. Totalitarianism is a type of government in which the system is entirely centralized and all citizens are completely subservient. According to this definition, the World State is a definite example of totalitarianism especially because it has complete control of its people.

This was designed to maintain a social structure and conditioning of the World State.

Chapter 2 goes into the next phase after the children are born. Which is the conditioning phase with the infants that are just 8 months old. They do this by similar means as the little Albert experiment done by John B. Watson very long ago. After they children have grow into there elementary years they condition them with a new tactic, which is called sleep teaching. Basically audio is played talking about a certain subject and the child is asleep but still absorbs the material and subconsciously knows it. "Alpha children wear grey. they work much harder than we do, because they are so frightfully clever. I'm really awfully glad im a beta, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the gammas and deltas" (Huxley 27). This goes to show the level of totalitarianism this society has over there people. They are literally force certain beliefs and mindsets into the youth to form them into a "perfect fit" for there category. Also it is a dystopia since there is literally no form of actual free will and freedom of the mind. Everyone takes part in the same things every day and without a family or anything they turn to sex but it's nothing more than just something they do without any thoughts of relationships or love. The World State has taught children that being promiscuous is alright as long as it keeps their society stable and productive. The sexualization of children shows just how dystopian the World State is.

For example, people in higher-level classes like Lenina and Henry get around using helicopters, while lower-level classes like Gammas use monorail tram-cars. These unusual methods of transportation show how far industrialism has gone in their society.

After Lenina asks Bernard out in the elevator, Benito notices that Bernard appears gloomy and offers him a gram of soma. This shows just how integral drugs are in the World State's dystopian society for stability since they play such a crucial role in controlling people's happiness. This society also seems dystopian near the end of this part of the chapter. Lenina and Henry constantly make classist comments about those below them in the hierarchy. These comments stem from beliefs they learned through hypnopaedia, a conditioning process that seems straight out of a dystopia.

The World State highly encourages drug use and consumption in order to keep their workers happy and productive. The World State's conditioning led her to believe in ideas that were almost the exact opposite of the Savage Reservation's, demonstrating the excess amount of control the new society has over its citizens. The dystopic nature of Linda's addiction to soma is also obvious in this chapter since she turns to alcohol as an alternative to it, despite her alcoholism being one of the main causes of John's trauma.

The reader learns more about Linda's new life in the Savage Reservation after being abandoned by the Director and giving birth to his child. Linda and her son, John, are both seen as outsiders to the rest of the Savage Reservation because she still wholeheartedly believes in the ideologies of the World State, leading to their alienation and exclusion. Industrialism has grown the new society to such a far extent that her beliefs directly contrast those of the "savages". Linda was conditioned (to rely on soma, to sleep with as many men as possible, etc.) so thoroughly in order to work well in the World State's industrial society, but the treatments she received are now the cause of her downfall in the Reservation.

This realization leads to him taking his own life in the lighthouse causing another individual to perish in the name of the World State's Stability.

Since he is from the Savage Reservation, he is seen as being just as uncivilized as an animal. The citizens of the World State heavily consume entertainment, and since they are used to seeing savages as a form of entertainment, they treat John like a circus animal. The World State's industrialism was meant to improve society, but it ends up making everything worse by dehumanizing and categorizing people. The citizens' over-consumption leads to John's suicide since he would not have been able to live in peace until his death.
