Where Could Lessons Be Taught/Reflections on Lessons by Amy Haynes

1. Post an idea of where and how these lessons could be best introduced to students. (Example: Core support, an Advisory Period, 1st Period, just electives, etc).

2. Post any wonderings or notices you have had about Mind Up based on the reading so far.

Unit 1: Getting Focused (Haynes)

I feel like the 5 lessons in Unit 1 would be great for teachers to cover in the first week to school. It would go along great with the PBIS lessons as the unit goal is to teach kids why they get distracted or escalated and give them strategies to refocus.

Being able to do a lesson for some core class.

I was reading this and I thought about how it could set up a great transition from my first couple of days and transition it to our narratives that ask them to be mindful of their surroundings. It is a great starter for classroom management and getting students to learn about their own surroundings and others' reactions. It gives each and everyone of us an expectation and purpose or behavior that can be easily built into my classroom. I would teach this to all my class.

I feel like the bulk of the lessons would best be taught during an advisory period (which we don't have). I'm wondering if we could assign students to a teacher and use our assembly schedules to carve our time in the morning or afternoon for these lessons. Every teacher would be responsible for teaching and every student would get the information once.

As PLCs we could decide how we want to take the advisory lesson and "connect it to the curriculum" in our classrooms.

If our goal was to get the whole school on board, I think that the best way to do that would be with an advisory period to start off the day. This would be your go-to teacher who you check in with every day and who gives you the tools (mind-up) to get your day started right. Then throughout your day, all of your teachers would also have the same language to remind you to "use your PFC."

If my math is right, (and assuming that no teacher would get prep or PLC during this time + no co-teaching), each of these groups would be fairly small too. Such a great home-base to give every student a positive relationship with an adult with a focus on self reflection and calming. It is so exciting!!
-VanDeburg
