How are accommodations made for English Language Learners (ELL) students? I noticed that in my teacher's classroom, she would make everyone work in small groups of 3 or 4. Sometimes she would give them the freedom to choose their groups, other times she assigned them to groups. She also provides word banks on quizzes or tests if there is a vocabulary section. This helps significantly since they are learning new words constantly. Lastly, the teacher will use visuals as often as she can so that the students can make that connection with the material that they are learning in class.

What resources are available in schools to help general education teachers support students with language needs? First, there are ESL teachers that are there to help guide the other teachers and give them strategies on how to instruct the ELL students. This is the most significant source for teachers since they can ask questions and get individualized feedback based on the students and classroom. There are also sometimes translators in the school that can work with parents during meetings or other important events that involve their child's schooling.

I can connect how some ELL students feel in an English-only classroom to the activity that we did in class. We read the poem entitled 'Jabberwocky' which had many unusual words. The questions then asked us what they meant and most students had a hard time answering them without any other materials. This is a great representation of how ELL students must feel in a mostly English classroom.

In class, we also had to read over commonly used academic language. We then discussed how this language could be altered so that the meanings are more clear to all students, including the ELL students. This is so important, especially when I have my own classroom one day. I can use the skills that I have learned in order to change the academic vocabulary into more accessible language for my students.
