Oil has changed Southwest Asia with all the money they are bringing in off of selling it. Southwest Asia has the world's largest known oil reserves there are also large reserves of natural gas. Money from the sales of the oil has been used to construct buildings and pave roads in Southwest Asia. It has also given money fro medical care that will help people live longer.

The oil is pumped out of the ground today was formed from plants and animals that lived and died in the ocean they sunk to the ocean floor and turned into rocks. Some of the remains did not turn into rock and the heat of the core and the pressure of the water turned it into oil or natural gas. The oil and gas seeps into tiny holes in the ground and stay there. Some of it rises to the surface and some stays in the dirt and remain trapped under a layer of imperial rock. Itt is like a cap for the rocks.

Oil Found in Pockets Deep in the Earth

Most of the world's oil is under Southwest Asia, because millions of years ago the part of the ocean with oil use to be underwater and the animals died and some of their bones turned into oil or natural gas. When two tectonic plates collide they create pockets that the oil can be found in. Oil companies drill into the cap rock and pump oil up to the surface, but sometimes it doesn't work and oil spills out into the water like in the GUlf of Mexico in 2010.

In 2002 the United Nations studied the change in the region in the past 30 years, and they found that people's life expectancy has increased by 15 years. And that the number of infants that die has dropped by two thirds. The united Arab Emirates and Kuwait both have a high GDP from selling oil. They both have small populations so they don't have to divide the GDP as much as other highly populated countries.

Not all countries that sell oil are rich, some are poor. For example Yemen is one of the 60 poorest countries in the world, it's population is about 80% of Saudi Arabia's and its oil production is just 1% of Saudi Arabia's so it has not been able to pull their people of of poverty. Some other countries in Southwest Asia have made a lot of money off of oil but have not used it to pull their people out of poverty.

Oil-Exportign countries: Working to Control the Price of Oil

MOst countries depend on oil sales to support their economy, and they want a steady flow of money to come back in. To meet that goal several oil-exporting countries formed the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1960. OPec wants oil prices to be steady not to high and not to low. If too much oil is put up for sale there will be more competition among buyers to get what they need. As a result prices will drop to low and there will be competition between buyers. Then the prices will rise too high to keep prices steady.
