Human population is the primary agent for the loss of of natural habitats and biodiversity in the Philippines. Deforestation of landscapes (viz. denudation and fragmentation) negatively impacts Philippine biodiversity on an exponential scale. Poorly controlled logging and mining activities have created mostly irreparable damage to forest cover, affecting the diverse assemblages of flora and fauna that inhabit forested landscapes. Also, deliberate cause of biodiversity loss is the participation in the extraction and exploitation of natural resources, including wildlife itself, for economic purposes.

The greatest/worst consequence of habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation in the Philippines is the decline of species population/diversity or even species extinction. Baco-Iglit National Park, a protected landscape in Mindoro Island, the Philippines. This area is the habitat of the Philippine and Mindoro endemic Bubalus mindorensis (tamaraw). Historical records suggest that the tamaraw can be found throughout the island even at sea level; however, due to increasing human population, habitat degradation (e.g., conversion of forests to agricultural lands, illegal logging), and poaching has caused the decline in the population of the tamaraw and is now declared as Critically Endangered.
