The emancipatory movements in our America were gestated 200 years ago in the search for the total autonomy of our nascent national states that sought independence from the Spanish crown, in the wake of their political weakening as a result of the struggles of peninsular Spain against the French occupation. . Panama was raised sovereign by its own virtue, as recognized by El Libertador Simón Bolívar in his congratulatory letter to José de Fábrega for the independence of the Isthmus and his voluntary adherence to the Bolivarian project of regional unity.

In Panama, the process by which this isthmus broke the colonial ties between its territory and the Spanish Empire, took place between November 10 and 28, 1821, thus ending 321 years of colonial life. Due to our commercial nature, Panama was a faithful colony to the Spanish crown, with an active economy in the middle of the 19th century; however, the Napoleonic invasion put the Spanish in a challenging situation in our territory.

In that same period, independence ideas were fought in South America, which caused the cancellation of free trade in the region and due to the discontent of merchants and the population, the seed of nationalism began to germinate, thus being born the emancipatory cause of the isthmus. Unlike other Central American countries, the independence of Panama had as an ideological figure the presence of Simón Bolívar, whose campaigns sought the liberation of the American nations, the isthmus being one of the last American nations to achieve its independence from Spain. Bolívar's dream of regional unity became the dream of Panamanians.

In the year 2021 the 200 years of Independence of Panama from Spain will be commemorated. The country celebrates its bicentennial together.
