Its name, which translates to "temple city" in the local Khmer language, refers to the fact that it was constructed as the state temple and political center of the empire of Emperor Suryavarman II, who governed the area from 1113 to 1150. 

By the end of the 12th century, Angkor Wat, which was once devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu, had converted to Buddhism.
