Flowers figured out the niche by looking at the stats from the Murder Monday segment; in an interview, flowers states, "You know, for me, my audience is mostly women. It's people who are interested in true-crime stories who want to be told a story. A lot of people have podcasts that are a lot more niche, and, again, if it's business related. You have to identify your audience first"

the challenges that Crime Junkie faced

Crime Junkie faced plagiarism allegations. In 2019, Crime Junkie was accused of plagiarism in episodes about Kirsten Hatfield and Kacie Woody, but a journalist named Cathy Frye claimed that an episode on Kacie Woody was largely based on her four-part series about the murdered teenager in 2003; Flowers had failed to attribute Frye as a source. This made a wave of journalists and writers who felt that other podcast episodes also mirrored their writings, sometimes verbatim, without any mention of sources. This caused the podcast to lose listeners and credibility, but Crime Junkie still remains popular to this day.
