This photo represents the main problem of this case study, in which Teryn, a young trans student at Riverway High School, has experienced instances of transphobia from her peers and teacher administration. Specifically, rather than being allowed to use the "girl's" bathroom, Teryn has been forced to use a bathroom that is located very far from her classes.

This gif relates to step 2 by showcasing how there are many different emotions that everyone involved is feeling. For Teryn and her parents, the must feel angry and upset with how the school handled this situation. As for Principal Trainor, he also might feel stressed, trying not to upset Teryn and her parents, but also listen to the commands of his superior.

Challenges include trying to get the other parents to rationalize with Teryn's situation. However, opportunities that would come out of an intervention include Teryn's ability to feel welcome and safe in her school environment, while also setting the precedent for other trans youth to let them know that they are welcome too. To this I say, "challenge accepted!"

Equitable outcomes in this scenario include the acknowledgement of transphobia in schools, and direct measures to keep people from being discriminated based on their gender identity. This includes Teryn and other trans youth being able to use the preferred bathroom of their choice, without feeling unsafe. This equitable outcome requires EVERYONE to look out for transphobia in school and hold others accountable when they are being discriminatory.

immediate term solutions should be to remove the "non-gendered bathroom" that Teryn would have to use, and instead allow her and other trans students to use the bathroom that they prefer to use. Following this action, the school should send out letters to all parents making it clear that they do not tolerate transphobia and do not discriminate their students based on gender.

Following the immediate term solutions, in the long term, the school should continue to create assemblies that focus on the impacts of transphobia and discrimination, encouraging students to keep their school a safe environment for everyone. Moreover, the school to continue to enforce their anti-discriminatory rules. To make sure their trans students feel safe, this school should also allow these students to express any concerns or instances where they feel unsafe.

Combining both the immediate and long term solutions, the main focus will be to address the transphobia and keep it from occurring again. This involves the removal of the inequitable "non-gendered bathroom", and the ability for Teryn and other trans students to use the bathroom of their choice. Additionally, the school will make it clear in assemblies that discrimination is not tolerated, and it is everyone's job to make their school a safe place.
