Border control has been a huge topic in the media in recent years with people wanting to come to the U.S. to have the opportunity to improve their lives or the lives of their family. Many immigrants come to the U.S. illegally and because they are illegal they do not have the access to some benefits U.S. citizens have.

The U.S borders should be open to everyone because it would allow immigrants the same opportunities that residents of the U.S and the same opportunity to improve their lives.

There are many immigrants working the U.S. today. In the article "How America's immigrant workforce is changing" by Octavio Blanco, the author states that "Today immigrants make up about 17% of the U.S. labor force -- and nearly one-quarter of those immigrants are undocumented." Many immigrants are working very hard today and other immigrants want to do the same but they can not get into the country. If the borders were opened U.S. business' would be able to grow and find more employees in the newly admitted immigrants.

Illegal immigrants living in the U.S. also pay an estimated $11 billion a year in taxes and “ an undocumented individual has about 8% of their income go to taxes” as stated in the article “7 ways immigrants enrich our economy and society” by Janet Murguia. An open border would allow immigrants to make even more money and would cause them to contribute an even larger amount of their annual income to yearly taxes giving more funding to the U.S. government.

Many illegal immigrants want to come to the U.S. legally but are not able to because of the long wait for legal citizenship."Getting a green card may take from a few months up to 10 years." as stated in the article "How long does it take to get a green card" by VisaGuid.World, it is also explained that the wait for a green card takes many years for the average person. Many green cards for workers do not last very long as well which can cause more problems for immigrant workers. With open borders immigrants would be able to come to the U.S. much easier and would not have to wait years on a waiting list for a green card that only lasts a few months.

There are many people that believe the borders should not be opened or even believe they should be closed because immigrants are portrayed as criminals in media. This is incorrect because illegal immigrants are less likely to commit a crime than naturally born citizens. In the article “ Two charts demolish the notion that immigrants here illegally commit more crime” by Christopher Ingraham it is stated that “there were 56 percent fewer criminal convictions of illegal immigrants than of native-born Americans in 2015” this shows that illegal immigrants are not a major cause of crime in the U.S. Immigrants are not a major threat to U.S. citizens as the media portrays them to be, naturally born citizens are more of a threat than immigrants.

The U.S. borders should be opened to immigrants who do not have a criminal record in their previous country of residence. Immigrant records could be checked to ensure they are not coming to the U.S. with bad intentions. There are many non-criminal immigrants that would love a chance to find a job in the U.S. These immigrants should be admitted to the country without the hassle they face in today's immigration policies.

The U.S. borders should be open to everyone because it allows immigrants the same opportunities that U.S. citizens have. Immigrants are a valuable piece of america today and should not be discriminated against. Everyone deserves to have the same opportunities and immigrants deserve them as well.

The Benefits of having Open Borders
The following cartoon makes the argument that having the borders closed, the immigrants jobs would be taken away leaving space for those certain professions. In the article, “16 Reasons Why Opening Our Borders Makes More Sense Than Militarizing Them”, by Roque Planas, Planas states “From tech to agriculture, U.S. employers are clamoring for the government to increase the number of immigrant visas to supply their industries with workers”. As the article mentions that immigrants do increase the number of factory workers, if the border were closed, the jobs that employ immigrants would have a lack of people .The jobs that were take by the immigrants were jobs that nobody else wanted to do so it would be very difficult to find people to replace them. In the image it list and shows some of the jobs that immigrants do have and having a wall around them. If the border wall was there to keep the immigrants out, all the jobs showed in the image would be in danger of lack of people. This ties in with the image by implying that if people were kicked out and the border were closed, there would be danger of employees for jobs.

There are many reasons the borders should not be opened. The borders are a very mandatory thing for the United States of America. They keep out disease, reduce population, and even lower the risk of a terrorism attack.

Some examples of why the borders should be closed is that a recent study says that “...the chance of being murdered by a tourist on a B visa, the most common tourist visa, is 1 in 3.9 million per year.” That may seem like it is a small margin but in actuality it is a higher chance than you might think.

Another example is the truck attack in manhattan in 2017. An immigrant from Uzbekistan who came here in 2010. This immigrant killed 11 people by running them over with a pickup truck, it was the deadliest New York Attack since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This proves that some immigrants can be very dangerous to the United States of America.

Many immigrants in the U.S. are unemployed and cost the government millions of tax dollars a year. In the article "The cost of immigration to the United States" by Matt O'Brien, it is stated that "taxpayers shell out approximately $134.9 billion to cover the costs incurred by the presence of more than 12.5 million illegal aliens" this shows the amount of money immigrants cost the U.S. Immigrants are not beneficial to the United States and we do not need more to come across.

You could say that immigrants can also benefit the United States of America in many positive ways, but there is too big of a threat of one of those immigrants performing a mass/ terror attack.

In conclusion, the borders being open can lead to many different problems with the United States of America. Again there can be some benefits but I believe there is too big of a risk that something drastic and horrific happening for the borders to be open.

While having the border closed is not the issue, it is keep the immigrants from coming in whenever they wall. In the article, “The 14 Most Common Arguments against Immigration and Why They’re Wrong”by Alex Nowrasteh, Nowrasteh states “Some immigrants do commit violent and property crimes ". While having immigrants might be a problem involving the crime rate, usually immigrants come over to start problems. When the immigrants try to sneak their way into enter the country, the have list of plans that they are going to do in the country. Some of the immigrants purpose is to cause trouble and in the image it shows the immigrants holding a list of crimes and activities that they are planning to do when inside the country. The article ties in with the image by saying that the country has to keep the border closed in order to stop any threat or terrorist attack that the immigrants are trying to plan within the country.
