Hand, Foot and Mouth (HFMD) is a virus that causes inflammation on the skin, sore throats, feeling unwell, fever and loss of appetite. The causes of HFMD are kissing or exchanging saliva, skin to skin contact, coughs and sneezes. HFMD infects mostly kids because as you get older, you develop antibodies. (essentially a cure that your body makes by itself) This disease is most common in the United States with 200,000 yearly cases.

We can take many precautions to avoid getting HFMD including keeping clean (washing your hands and taking showers) and avoiding physical contact with people infected with HFMD. There is no cure for HFMD mostly because as you grow older you develop antibodies for it. Also, it is not possible to get HFMD twice because your body immediately becomes immune to HFMD after experiencing it. If you get HFMD, you should prevent physical contact with people and go see a doctor. Also, there are certain pain medications that are used to stop pain caused by HFMD. Usually you start showing symptoms at least 3 days after you have been infected.

The digestive system, Immune system, lymphatic system, respiratory system and cardiovascular system are all affected by HFMD.

The digestive system is affected by it because it causes ulcers and a sore throat. The lymphatic system swells up. Respiratory system is affected because HFMD causes dehydration and loss of appetite. The worst that can happen is the virus spreading to vital organs and the brain. The cardiovascular system can be affected because more major cases of HFMD are caused by EV71 which can transform into meningitis and encephalitis.

The immune system helps fight off viruses. The immune system responds and attacks the HFMD virus by sending T and B defender cells. The B-cells and T-cells defend, and send red blood cells to attack and make antibodies to fight of the virus. Once the virus is gone and defeated, the B-cells memorizes the virus so anytime the virus tries to come back, the cells will recognize it and react sooner.
