This idea/belief/rumor takes place since normally kids had swallowed gum by accident or by curiosity, fathers take their kids to the doctor and discovered that the gum is there or that it had blocked the kids intestines.
Chewing gum is designed to chew not to swallow, there’s a lot of people and rumors that thing it can be harmful for the body and that it takes some years for it to be digested, it is true that gum can’t be digested because our body doesn’t posses digestive enzymes that could break the base that composes gum but it does not stay on our stomach.
In really extreme cases it can block intestines but gum simply travels the same path as food does and goes on to be excreted.

D. Do you think it is reliable? Why?

We believe that the sources of information that we have used are reliable because we are basing off of scientific facts disproving that we physically cannot fully absorb it because of its insoluble gum base. Gum is made with the intention of not sticking to stomach walls or and intestinal tract. Since chewing gum doesn't have any nutritional value, our body recognizes that and rejects it immediately by expelling it out of our bodies as soon as it is put in the digestive system. This myth is unreliable information that has been passed out on over the years by different generations and has been debunked by thousands of different studies and research over the years. Our information is reliable because we took in account and considered several different studies and informed ourselves from more than one source of information and came to the conclusion that it is false for multiple reasons.

We used several sources of information in order to have more point of views as well as more arguments to prove this myth was wrong. We used mainly 2 sources: mayoclinic.org and duke health.org both of them are known and have good reputation. They are serious organizations that post articles about health related issues, and tend to be popular since they have many topics and tend to be well qualified by the internet community. By reading several articles and investigating, we concluded that eventually your body will pass the gum, however it is true that it wasn't meant to be eaten.

Which arguments disprove your myth?

There are several arguments to disprove that this is a myth:

- There’s no scientific proof that “It takes seven years to digest chewing gum”, on the other hand, there surely is proof that chewing gum is designed to be chewed and not swallowed, but it generally isn't harmful if swallowed.

- According to scientists and doctors, it is possible that swallowing large amounts of gum have major issues on children, such as blocking their intestines, so this action committed occasionally can actually produce some major health problems, but it doesn’t “Take seven years to digest chewing gum exactly”.

- According to DukeHealth most people empty their stomachs 30 to 120 minutes after eating, and that includes gum. Gum is no different than other food and it will never take 7 years to digest it according to experts.
