Polluted Air by Maureen McCormack

Thinking about Science and Technology Task -
Identify something that you do or have done that was affected by air pollution or poor quality air, either outdoors or indoors.
Questions:
What steps could have been taken, if any, to prevent air from being polluted in the first place?
How might an understanding of particle theory help you to understand why air quality in can get worse in hot weather and when there is no wind?

Driving a Car! (Julianna)

Some things that we as people have done that has polluted our air is driving too much. Car gas is a very thick gas. Since there are so many cars around the world that are being used right at this second, a lot of the gas is being released into the air. We can stop this situation easily by not driving as much or using a bike to travel around. This might be a problem for e-mobile people to ride around in bikes, but they can also help the situation by just not driving around as much as they do on a daily basis.

Another way we as people have done things that has polluted our air is producing heavy crude oils. This is a very big issue since it is one of our necessities to have oil. We can fix this by using lighter oil instead of such a heavy and thick oil. This can help because 40% of the time, lighter oil won't cause as much pollution than regular thick oil does. Problem is, lighter oil costs way more then the original crude oil does.

If there is no wind and we leave the car running while it is still, it makes you feel as if you are choking on the polluted air. Without the air to help regulate, it will make you feel as if you are choking on the air.

If there was no wind when heavy crude oils were in place it will not only pollute the air, but it would really stink because the hot air basically cooks the oil causing it to stink. There really isn't a way that air could help with the ocean part but it could help with the air to help move around the smell and the polluted air that it produces.

~Julianna Carcasole

A Day at a Beach (Lauren)

One thing that I have personally experienced is when I went to beach by a factory. We had to leave quite earlier than we had anticipated because of the poor air quality. My brother was just recovering from a bad cold and the air was really taking a toll on him so my mom said we had to leave or else my brother would get sick again. I wish we could've stayed longer but it was just too hard on him.

The factory could have tried to contain or limit the pollution. The entire time we were at the beach, they were pumping out smoke and pollution. Eventually, there was even a dark haze above the place we were. The factory could have tried to reduce the pollution it was producing or limit the pollution to a certain time of day. They could have at least tried to contain the pollution but instead they just let it go out of the smokestacks for hours.

If we had a better understanding of the particle theory, we would know that on that hot summer day, the particles in that gas would expand, spread apart and cover more area. My family and I could have planned ahead and known that the smog would be bad because of how humid it was. The heat and humidity caused the particles in the smoke to expand and cover more area and the lack of breeze caused it all to stay in one spot. If we had known before hand, we could have avoided going to the beach that day and had a better experience on a different one.

~Lauren Halkes

Some of our worst mistakes as human beings are polluting the air. Everybody makes mistakes but this mistake is hard to fix it can’t be done in a day but if we work hard enough one day we can help air pollution. When you pass the factories in Hamilton especially on the highway if you open your window the thing that you well smell first is the smoke. From all the factories and with all the smoke exporting the factories the air becomes gray and that is what we call air pollution. Without air we will all die so we need clean air to help us breathe instead of polluted air which affects our breathing. Some ways we can help the air pollution is trying and make it more environment friendly by maybe making less of the things their creating the funds will go down. then in the long run it will help the environment to a more clean world. If they had a clear understanding of the particle theory so they can see a complete explanation on what they are doing and how they are really affecting our lives. With it being windy the smoke can start travelling to different cities which could affect more places. If people knew more about the particle theory they would truly know what they are doing to our earth.

I have to say i have polluted a few times and my dad has as well because sometimes i litter and my dad smokes.

Hamilton has a 43 % admission into hospitals due to respiratory problems because of air pollution. Down town Hamilton has the worst air pollution in the country. Because of Hamilton's high air pollution, the public health department has to monitor the waters in Hamilton harbor and beaches for levels of e coli. Something that I used to do but do not anymore, is walks down by the harbor of Hamilton with family. Particle theory ...particles move more in heated environments then they do in cooler, particles move more in the industrial area because of smoke stakes which means burning of a chemical expanding in the air, and when me and my family used to go for walks in Hamilton it was extremely hard to breathe and it smelt awful. As of May 2016 Hamilton was ranked the worst air quality in all of Canada's cities.

I remember this one time when we were doing a bonfire and roasting marshmallows and hot dogs, there was this one campsite near us that was burning their garbage in their fire and it smelt horribly!! They were burning all sorts of things especially plastic containers. We had to leave our site for a few hours because of the stench was unbearable. Even after we came back, we can still smell it. That night, I remember all of us sleeping with our faces in our shirts!! This type of careless behaviour could be prevented by throwing garbage in the garbages and putting the plastics in the recycling bins instead of burning it and causing a chemical breathing hazard to the campers beside them! For two days we put up with it and eventually when we made it to Florida it was worth it.

This could have been easily avoided if people simply used a Eco-friendly method of transportation such as a bike, or using a electric car such as a Tesla. Basically if their car ran on anything but gas it should've been a lot safer for us and the environment. An understanding of the particle theory could help you because when the air is hot/humid the particles created by smoke move around more as appose to when it's cold. Along with the facts that the wind cant blow it away, and it cant go away because it goes all in between the busy city buildings. Not to mention the endless amounts of motorized vehicles making the conditions even worse. -Oskar.M

This year we went to North Carolina on a car trip with my family. It was a hot, dry day and we probably drank two gallons of water in 20 minutes. Anyway as we were “cruisin” through New York state, we drove past the “bad part of town” that was completely filled with garbage everywhere with smokers smoking and we had the windows open which, was a big mistake at the moment so once we closed the windows we started coughing and we smelt the worst smell ever because of that place. I honestly don’t understand why we went to that one area, but we sure realized our mistake.

Anyways, I never fully understood why they would pollute on area so bad, that the conditions are practically unlivable. We sat there coughing for like 2 minutes when people there live their for their entire life thinking that all the world is polluted that badly. -Damian Maslowski

Me and my family went on a little trip down to Fort Erie last year in the summer. As we were driving we all saw a big hunk of black smoke come up where we thought was just trees but as we drove closer to the smoke, because we were curious, we saw 3 huge factories pumping smoke like to was nothing. We started to drive away and once we were about 1 km away we could still see huge amounts of smoke coming from that huge chimney on the roof. It doesn’t help that there was three all near each other. Maybe they could've put less chemicals in what they were making and burning inside of those factories. The air quality gets worse with no wind because all of the smoke in the area will stay in that area because the wind isn’t their to get pushed somewhere else.

-Joshua Post

The factories were letting the smoke go like it was nothing. As we passed by the factory we drove farther until we couldn't see as much smoke as we did before. After about an hour there was another factory pumping smoke. we kept driving until we got to kearney. we saw about six factories, as we were driving to Kearney.

This could have been easily avoided, if there wasn't as many factories or if they didn't let go as much smoke as they did.

when i was 10 years old my family and I went to myrtle beach. it was a sixteen hour drive. every once and a while we had to stop and get gas. my dad was driving a motor home, it is a very large vehicle so we needed a lot more gas then in a regular car. when u are driving any vehicle the engine pipe releases lots of toxic fumes into the air. some of the things we could have done to prevent us from using too much gas are we should have taking a plane or taking a smaller vehicle.

Using products in your home!

Many people, when they think of air pollution, they think about smog and car emissions. This is what is called outdoor air pollution but it is more dangerous when it becomes indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution occurs when certain air pollutants from particles and gases contaminate the air of indoor areas. These air pollutants can cause respiratory diseases or even cancer. Removing the air pollutants can improve the quality of your indoor air.
When we use household cleaning products or painting supplies to paint our walls, these things can affect our indoor air pollution.

When consumers buy commercial cleaning products, we expect them to do one thing: clean! We use a wide array of scents, soaps, detergents, bleaching agents, softeners, scourers, polishes, and specialized cleaners for bathrooms, glass, drains, and ovens to keep our homes sparkling and sweet-smelling. But while the chemicals in cleaners foam, bleach, and disinfect to make our dishes, bathtubs and counter-tops gleaming and germ-free, many also contribute to indoor air pollution, are poisonous if ingested, and can be harmful if inhaled or touched.

When I clean my house I always make sure to open my windows to let the smell of the products be released outside. A side effect if you don't open windows when you clean around your house is that can be can harmful to your body when you breathe it in and can cause side effects to your body. This also contributes to painting your house.

A couple months ago we painted the whole main level which is a lot considering it is a big open space. Since it's a big open space it makes it more difficult to breathe with all of the chemical smell from the paint. We had to open all of the windows so the smell can escape outside.

When you use these types of products make sure to have an access to any windows so it's easier for you to breathe. If you don't open the windows it will be impossible for you to breathe and it can affect your body in many ways. ~Isabella.D~
