Introduction: Ratliff's idea of "Closeness

In this padlet, I am going to focus on the main idea of Chapter 14; "closeness". Ratliff had developed this idea in music termed "closeness". Basically, closeness is the collaboration or close synchronization of two or more musical elements or artists connecting into one, amplifying the effect of the music. That when artist's play the music, considering everyone has their own unique sound, can play a piece together it allows synchronization into a more lively piece. Even though they may be playing 2 different instruments, portraying 2 different sounds, the closeness when these sound sync allow the music to be expressed more enchantingly. This idea is portrayed in Ratliff's words when he claims "When two musicians of any kind are synchronizing on the surface levels and the deeper ones, too, that’s something else. It’s often what makes a good performance great, and what makes a certain kind of listening experience great." That idea is what will be consistent among this padlet. I will cover a music example from Ratliff's list, and a musical example of my own choice that I feel exhibit closeness. Then utilize quotes and images I feel encompass the idea of closeness.

Ben Ratliff. Every Song Ever (Kindle Locations 2334-2336). Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
Sade-Love is Stronger then Pride

This is my selection of a song that I feel portrays closeness. In love is stronger then pride by Sade, one will notice the band themselves embody this idea of closeness. The musical elements utilized by the band, all unique within this song from beat to pitch, to the actual musicians and background singers; all combine to closely synchronize into one beautifully sounding piece. All these unique elements in this song are different but mend together beautifully representing the idea of closeness as well.

The Jackson 5-Would Ya Would Ya Baby

Off of Ratliff's playlist I have selected Jackson 5's upbeat funky song "Would Ya Would Ya Baby". I feel this song is a prime example of closeness and the liveliness it creates. In this song, Jackson 5 utilize unique sounds all collectively singing together allowing somewhat of a synchronization to occur. This closeness created within their vocals all together enables this song to feel bright and actually alive. This is primarily what Ratliff was conveying by the effect of closeness throughout the chapter.
