(speaking to afflicted girls (Bridget Bishop) I never saw these persons before...(Examiner) They say you bewitched your first husband to death. (Bridget Bishop) If it please your worships, I know nothing of it. *She shook her head and the afflicted were tortured*(Examiner) Why you seem to act witchcraft before us by the motion of your body, which seems to have influence over the afflicted? (Bridget Bishop) I know nothing of it. I am innocent to a witch. I know not what a witch is" - “The Examination of Bridget Bishop at Salem Village,” April 19, 1692, as recorded by Samuel Parris, and father of one of the afflicted girls, this means that all the "afflict" had to do is moving while the accused is moving and people thought they were bewitched.

After the spike, there weren't as many deaths. I believe that is because they thought they got all the witches and they didn't have to be on edge anymore.

Document C shows that people took this very seriously and thought that there were actually witches at Salem, so because this is being taken so seriously the people of Salem are probably on the edge and any strange behaviour could make them believe that you are a witch, and you didn't have to have any evidence that you are a witch some people may have made up lies about someone they didn't like causing the numbers of "witches" to increase scaring more people, cause more people to look at everything everyone does.

Document H says "The diagnosis also explains many of the adult fits experienced by those who were convinced that their neighbours were conjuring against them." This goes to show that not only were these people building up unneeded hysteria they were causing people to develop anxiety and have panic attacks, which they called "bewitchment". They then blamed random people as the cause of this bewitchment. Then in turn developing more hysteria around the whole situation, thus continuing the cycle. (nora)

As you can see from Document I the accusers and the accused was very spaced out on the map. The hysteria spread like wildfire and people who possibly didn't know the accused were accusing them of bewitchment and affliction on towards other people. Where there weren't a lot of "witches" there were a lot of people to defend them; where there weren't a lot of defenders there were a lot of accused "witches". You can see from the map that the accusers and the accused were on different sides of town. (nora)

It goes on to talk about how Ergot was used as a drug by the Aztecs because it has 10% the activity of LSD (a hallucinogenic drug); it continues to say that it will ruin crops to the extent that they won't reappear for many years. It says that in the long run of ingesting this fungus there will be side effect of crawling sensations in the skin, tingling in fingers, vertigo, hallucinations, mania, melancholia, psychosis, and delirium and the fact that these most commonly affect women rather than men.

In conclusion, we believe the cause of the Witch Trials was Mass Hysteria and Anxiety brought up by the hysteria. Using Document B we explained that the hysteria caused more people to be anxious and draw up more hysteria as the accused started to be executed. With Document C we explained that with the air of seriousness surrounding the trials helped to create and spread the hysteria leading to more anxiety. Furthermore using Document I, we explained that the hysteria spread to the other side of town; which shows that the hysteria was not confined to one part of Salem, but spread to another part of town where most of the accusings came from. Finally, with Document H, we explained that the people of Salem were fabricating very much unneeded hysteria causing people to develop anxiety and have panic attacks which they passed off as bewitchment. These people were scared and they blamed and executed innocent people for cursing them to be this way.
