Click anywhere on this padlet and share with us how you would respond to the following scenario (as a Classroom Teacher). Be sure to post your name with your response: Today you are an Intervention Specialist Teacher working with 15 Kindergarten Students alone. As you are teaching your Math Lesson, you notice that one of the students will not sit with the group or anywhere after repeated attempts to include him. At this time all of the other KDG students are 75% engaged in your lesson in 10 minute segments. How do you proceed?

At first, I would give the student a minute or so to be alone in the safe space of the classroom- proceeding with my lesson. If the student then did not come and engage with the lesson I would ask another kindergarten student to go and see if the other student wanted to sit with them. If both student do not come back and engage I would try and provide a quick math hands on opportunities for all students. Then in that moment I would try to interact with the kindergarten student that was not engaged to gain a better understanding of what was troubling them.

I would ask the wandering student to join me at the front of the class and help me teach the lesson. This may help get the wandering student engaged without pulling him aside and interrupting the lesson. This would also engage the student and make him feel responsible for others learning.

If the student was not able to rejoin by several prompts from me, I would have him help me teach. Like he was my helper. So giving him tasks. I think there are some students that always need a job, and to give him a "job" he would feel included with the class. He would be hearing the lecture/activity, but he would also feel important as well. If that didn't work, then I would go quietly over to him and ask him what he is interesting in doing. Maybe I can then include that topic or activity into the lesson.

I would first see if the student was paying attention to the lesson. If he was, I would let him do his thing as long as he was not disrupting others. If he was not paying attention, then I would have him be my helper to attempt to get him more engaged with the lesson and make him less of a distraction to the other kids.
