I chose to find an article for the cost of college. I chose this because it’s something that is very relevant to me right now because we're starting the process of applying to school. This article is talking about how the cost of college has increased over the decades. It also talks about how students have been viewing college as less worthy of going. It also mentions that students have to get loans to pay the new costs of college. The national student debt was 500 Billion in 2007. But today it is 1.6 Trillion dollars.

Now in the first days of October, he was ousted as Speaker of the House after every present Democrat voted in favor of removing him and 8 Republicans voted to oust McCarthy.

In Summation, Less than a month after the Iowa Supreme Court left a six-week abortion ban unenforceable, lawmakers passed a nearly identical set of restrictions on the procedure. Supporters and opponents of the legislation told wrenching personal stories and described how religious beliefs shaped their views on abortion. This article shows the rapid expansion of these dangerous restrictive values in our government about restricting abortion access to women. Abortion access is important because as a young woman who values reproductive health, even though I live in a radical and progressive state I'm scared that those ideas can seep into our state government and put future generations of girls in danger. Who cares? Women should care. The government is taking away our bodily autonomy, what's to say they won't give less access to other women's health services that are essential? Teen women should care because in some states restrictions are enforced even when we are abused, let alone in accidents. Men should care, the government puts restrictions on the products and services that put them at ease. Men should care about the health of their daughters, wives, and mothers.

Why?

I found an article on New York’s rising rent and how people that have minimum wages can’t keep up with the cost of living in a big city such as New York. I chose this article because it seemed fairly interesting and made me realize how costly it can be to live in New York.

Summary

The article approaches the idea of minimum wage and how a lot of states already have accordingly raised minimum wages as a response to inflation to make living more suitable. Cities such as Denver, Los Angeles, Washington D.C have managed to overcome this issue while New York hasn’t even come close in tackling this issue. The living conditions in this city aren’t the best as of right now and having to pay so much money to deal with these conditions is hard for those who are stuck at $15/hr.

Who Cares?

People that first begin to work jobs when they move to the US might be aiming to get a degree in a college and have to pay off their debts with a minimum wage job. It’s gonna be incredibly hard as they have to first put their living costs upfront and then their tuition.

I chose gun violence, gun violence has been a big issue everywhere in the world as it has been present everyday and families have been worried about their safety of their children. I am also worried as where I live it was a peaceful block but there have been incidents of a person getting shot. Gun violence/ crimes have drastically increased in 2021-2022, in 2021 there were 15,267 more gun deaths than in 2012. In Thailand a 14 year old in a mall unleashed a shooting spree. Thailand is known for its highest rates of gun ownership and gun crimes. In Thailand people want to address how guns are easily available and obtained, about 7.2 million privately owned guns are owned by people. So in a tuesday evening the 14 year old unleashed a shooting spree, a woman named gisele chang saw 3 people in the floor covered in blood addressing how that day was scary for her. People in general care as they are worried and care for their safety. People are worried that they can't even feel safe around their house or wherever they go. Its a national concern that people are worried and the government and even the president should be accounted for with the police being more involved.

I decided to choose inflation because everything I enjoy costs double the amount I used to pay. Such as the foods I enjoy like bacon, egg, and cheese cost $5 and now used to be $2.50. And even some household incomes cost more.
This article was mainly about how certain people are struggling to keep up with household payments. Because of inflation people with weaker jobs, it’s hard for them to keep up with payments due to the fact that they aren’t getting paid enough. But the people with a well-paid job would pay anything that is in their way without any worries, which is just unfair. They even mention how the low-paid worker's salaries will rise a bit more in 2019-2020, but not as much as those high-paid workers' salaries going up to thousands.

We should care about inflation because that indicates that prices would start going up even more which would lead to payments not being paid. Imagine being a grown adult you would have to pay bills like cars, house, electricity, etc… so much money will be spent on that. And now what if inflation goes even higher your gonna be spending all your earnings on those, no time to buy things you would want.

Woman's Rights: Shalvi, Hailed as a Mother of Feminism in Israel, Dies at 96 - Sadia

The issue I chose was women's rights, mostly because although the issue should have been resolved in 1920 it is being resurrected. I have seen a lot of youtube shorts that go against what the women’s suffrage movement was for and recently there has been a lot of shaming and talks about feminism. It’s just that there are some talks where some part of society feel that feminism is here women need to just be headstrong and be leaders and just not the opposite and see it as an issue, which I strongly disagree with and a lot of these strong talks have been placed into new shows and updated movies such as “Snow White”.

This article revolves around the social activist, Alice Shalvi who defied gender norms and pressed for equality in marriage, employment and education and more. In the article it gives out that Shalvi had passed away and overviews her work and background from her time on earth. Shalvi defied stereotypes and conventions that did lead to her paying a price whether it was in her professional life as an educator or as her personal life as a mother. She was expected to follow the Israeli Rabbinate but she challenged it and forged her own path.

I really cared about this because Alice Shalvi’s life showed that one can fight for their rights and privileges without not losing the opportunity to want to be a mother or wife. I say this mostly because nowadays, feminism goes on about how valuable it is for women to be leaders, which is great, but Shalvi shows that there is nothing wrong with it.

I chose to find an article related to inflation. I chose this topic, since inflation is something that many of us today are still facing, even seeing things being sold at similar prices for smaller quantities.
The article was discussing the issue of inflation most likely being persistent due to the inflated gas prices. It mentions how with many things sold there is a requirement for transportation which requires fuel, but the fuel is inflated so due to this the prices keep rising on these goods. As well many other factors such as Russia being main producers of oil currently are withholding it due to the war happening in Ukraine, and countries like the U.S going against Russia. So from these issues the U.S and many other countries have resorted to having to get oil from other areas causing the prices to go up and therefore causing other goods that are transported to be inflated.

We should care since everyone in the world is impacted by this, inflation is a grand factor that impacts the entire world. The issue of inflation has been a recurring issue that on any scale causes issues locally, nationally, and globally, since higher prices make it harder for people to meet their basic needs. If these issues continue to persist, many will suffer great problems due to this factor.

The issue that I choose to find an article for is gun violence because it seems to be more interesting as this issue has gained more notice from people. It has been a greater issue as more people are getting killed by guns. It talks about gun violence and how the president is trying to deal with the issue of gun violence. This was to hype up the Biden administration for the re-election of the president. Democrats are trying to elect an assault weapons ban for the issue but it would be put into law since it is a majority Republican house. We should care about this issue because this will directly impact the students and adults in school. It will help with the safety of the school and reduce anxiety of not getting shot in school during their school day. It will also help with the mass killing of students in school with guns restricted.

I chose the Political Division because I find that topic a very controversial and complicated topic to elaborate more on. It’s been an ongoing issue for years and still to this day we have a Political Division on a variety of subjects or debates involving the US. This article talks about Political Divisions hurting people’s families. They used to do everything as a group but now things have taken quite a turn. Their mail has been separated and most of the time the family in this article mentions that they talk about politics. It is the only topic that is “triggering” a bit especially with their own views on politics or a subject of importance. I care about this because this issue is dividing families and is increasing across the US. This issue is affecting families in a negative manner due to the political views they have on a subject. It separates them because they disagree and agree with some things and it’s said to be kind of the main topic being opened up with people they live with.

I feel that climate change is an important topic because it affects every person, animal, plant, and environment.

We are currently the best at fighting viruses. But, because of climate change, warm areas are getting bigger. These warmer areas create places for disease spreading insects to thrive. For example, mosquitoes spread the malaria virus and because of larger warmer areas they have more places to nest and feed.

This means that the number of mosquito nets will increase and inturn make the number of people killed by malaria will increase. Climate change doesn’t just increase the number of viruses, it also increases the number of deaths caused by heat stroke. Heat waves also don’t affect all areas the same.

I chose to find an article regarding high tuition costs because I am an upcoming college student. This means that I may be burdened with an expensive tuition.

Many colleges, including Colby-Sawyer College, are adopting tuition resets, wherein they substantially lower their advertised tuition fees to better align with the actual costs students incur after receiving financial aid. This shift comes as colleges face heightened competition for students and a growing sense among families that the cost of a college education is unjustifiably high. There is a perception that many colleges inflate their prices to mimic elite institutions, but, in reality, these prices don't accurately reflect what most students pay. While tuition resets have resulted in increased applications and inquiries, their long-term effects are still uncertain, and they may carry risks, such as diminishing the allure of substantial scholarships.

People should take an interest in tuition resets at colleges because they have a direct bearing on the affordability and availability of higher education. These resets can make college more financially feasible for students and their families, potentially alleviating the pressure of student loan debt. Furthermore, they question the conventional pricing structure in education, sparking a wider conversation about the actual expense of college and the benefits it offers to students.

This article is about FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried meeting with U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, a big deal in the crypto world. But, D.C. crypto lobbyists are still having a hard time getting clear rules and acceptance. This shows that powerful people within crypto are gaining more influence in shaping the rules for crypto. It also signifies the struggle to establish a clear regulatory framework. I think people who are trying to get into crypto or people who are already in crypto currency should care because the article shows how much influence big crypto people are gaining into shaping the rules of crypto. If they choose to do so they can change laws that benefit them more than the average person that dabbles into crypto. This could cause the average person to either lose money or buy a certain crypto currency from exchanges that hold these influences, which in turns creates a monopoly on the crypto market.

What issue did you choose to find an article for? Why? [2-3 Sentences]

I chose to research school shootings because it’s relatable. It could be any day when one person wants to shoot any school they want because of how accessible guns are. The rights to use guns are protected under the federal level, so there’s no way to completely get rid of guns. This is why different states are taking different approaches to limit guns, but to no avail.

Summarize the Article [4-5 Sentences]:

A teenager threatened a school shooting in Fort Lauderdale, which caused Florida's law officials to adapt their red flag law. The boy got his gun confiscated, but this also caused controversies around how extreme gun control laws should be. Only two states, Florida and Indiana, have such laws. Advocates are saying that these laws protect the lives of students. While, opposers argue that they simply don’t work. The boy somehow got his hands on a gun that the police recovered and shot the hands of his sister. Therefore, they argue that gun culture is already built in people and taking away their guns will only make them more likely to shoot.

Who Cares? [3-4 Sentences]

It’s important because currently in America, there’s more guns than people. This means that anyone can be turned into a victim of mass shooting. If laws such as the red flag law in Florida is passed, it will save countless lives. To add on, these are student lives who have nothing to do with it. It’s annoying that people keep bringing up gun control, but without any plans for actual reforment.

I chose to find an article for Inflation. I chose inflation as the issue to research because I feel it is one of the most significant issues that we as American and New York residents face on most days. Inflation has become such a prominent issue in this current day that countless people are complaining about it each day.

The main issue that this article addresses is that New York City now has the biggest income gap of any large county in the country. The article mentions that one problem that contributes to this effect is the fact that the one who are rich are only getting richer, meanwhile everyone else struggles financially. Many of the citizens express how this feels vastly unequal, with minimum wages decreasing and prices of necessities increasing, it now becomes extremely difficult to sustain you or your loved ones if you do not have any income/money to fall back on. Due to this, many residents (like the one interviewed in the article) consider moving to different states, where everything is cheaper, in the hopes that they’ll be able to live a life where they don’t have to be working or busy 24/7 just to put food on the table or keep a roof over their head.

People should care about this issue because it affects a countless amount of people and is only getting worse by the day. Prices are constantly increasing and wages are constantly decreasing, which makes it very hard for low-income residents to be able to provide for themselves or their family. Without a change in the economy, many will be forced to move if they don’t want to be in debt.

I chose the Climate change/ global warming issue. I chose it because it is something that our generation will pay for really soon, unless we change our direction and try our best to stop the continuous hurting of the planet. The Article speaks on Biden and his administration, which promised (in the elections) to start reducing gas emissions and put a pause on all of the oil extortion which is being bad for the planet. It was said that 25% of the country’s emission is with oil rigs pulling oil. But people are becoming more mad since Biden approved the “willow” oil project. Which is now getting more oil, and more drilling. This was the opposite of what Biden said, and people are threatening to not vote and give their support and turn on him in the next election. People are tired of this, and Trump would go on to say that he will reverse what Biden put in and his promises, for the 2024 elections. Everyone should care, because we live on the Earth. Even though it might be cliché, the planet is suffering greatly and we are only focused on ourselves. Even then, those with higher power care only about their lives and disregard that their actions will change the upcoming generations' paths3. We should care because we are the ones who will live through this and suffer if we don't put an end to it.

I choose Immigration issues to find an article for because people leave their home country for better lives. Immigration laws in the United states allows citizens to bring their family into this country but it also leads families to be separated from their loved ones. The Immigration system brought people closer to their families and it also separated people from their family. Most people try to escape into the United states at the border under the fence. Even though millions of immigrants live in the United States without documents, there is a risk of being deported. Now the states are writing bills to give citizenship to these undocumented immigrants. The people who are living in the country without any documented lives in fear of being deported. Living away from their family and they are not able to meet their family. Those people want to get citizenship so they can visit their family.

The issue I chose to find an article about was Gun Violence. Gun Violence is an incredibly important topic in the United States and in other nations in the world. The reason it's a problem is because of how many governments don't exactly work on trying to fix it with many deaths and injuries coming from this issue alone. In the article, they start off with an anecdote of a fourteen year old kid who was visiting their relative’s home. Another kid got a gun from under a t-shirt in their parents drawer, thinking it wasn’t loaded, shot the kid only for them to
die 17 minutes later. The article continues by talking about how fatal injuries from guns have been increasing for children while fatal injuries from car crashes have been decreasing. They then begin talking
about the increase in suicide with the use of a gun. If someone were to ask who cares about this subject, the answer would be, who wouldn’t care about the safety of children, especially when they have a future ahead of them only for it to be taken away. Things like this is the reason why we need more gun safety laws or for gun manufacturers to make more failsafes on the guns they work on. Not only does this affect children, but also definitely adults, who are responsible for taking care of these children but own guns as well.

This article talks about a shooting that occured at 5:30p.m. on a thursday. A Bronx man was fatally wounded and assumed to have been rushed to the hospital not long after. Since then, police security of time square had been doubled to further stop an incident from this happening, and our mayor is the one that had put this into place. “In the last three months of 2022, the police were reporting one felony every three days, compared with every two days in 2021, Mr. Harris said,” this article talks about how gun violence still persists but it is slowly getting under control. I care because this could have been me instead of the Bronx man. It could have been anyone and this could have affected them and their families, friends and loved ones. Not to mention, this puts more people in fear of their own lives.

I chose to find an article about the issue of Lobbying because it is an effort by people to prevent the government from enacting any meaningful legislation that seeks to improve the lives of many people and improve society for the better. In this article, it discusses a food safety program called ServSafe. Their main intention is to teach kitchen workers how to serve the food that they cook safely. The worker's responsibility is to pay the program to offer them those safety lessons. However, they have a secret intention of using that money from the workers to pay for efforts that seek to block legislation to increase the minimum wage by the National Restaurant Association. Once some workers knew about that, calls to avoid ServSafe were brought up from Democratic Lawmakers. This issue of Lobbying not only applies to the prevention of a minimum wage increase. Lobbying efforts are done to pay politicians to prevent gun safety legislation from getting passed through the gun lobby. As well as preventing climate change legislation from getting passed through fossil fuel companies.

I chose this issue out of all the other ones because it is the issue that a majority of Americans face in their daily lives, no matter your age, race or gender. That being said, it is an issue that everyone as a personal connection to or an opinion on it not like other issues like political separation, where people have to deeply be involved to understand how it works or what's going on.
In this article, New York City Mayor Eric Adams speaks to the city's residents about one of their biggest problems: mental health. He explains that in addition to the large number of prisoners and homeless people and minority groups who are most disadvantaged by mental health services, there are many (100,000) people struggling with severe mental health issues like bipolar disorder and major depression. This article also elaborates on Adams' plan to help these New Yorkers get more access to these mental health services, like psychiatrist visits and treatment, with the assistance of The Governor of New York.
The ones that should care the most based on this article are the people that reside in New York, specifically New York City, since Mayor Adams is the mayor of NYC. They are ones that should care the most because it affects how people with mental health issues in this city have access to it and how they are treated. The next ones that should matter are the American people as a whole. I say this because if this agenda works significantly than this stance of improving the mental health services might reach the politicians down in D.C., and might make into law even more mental health access and services.

In choosed Political Divisions because every part of the country has a problem of political parties clashing against each other, because of this many major problems like national debt, gun violence, and gun rights aren’t resolved or reduced with constant division going on. If there is constant disagreement nothing gets done. It was about political chaos that is going on in Texas after impeaching a right-wing Republican for corruption, bribery, and abuse during office. It had caused a major division in the republican party with some threatening others. Some say that the trial which will happen sometime soon will be explosive and toxic. They say it might cause deep tensions and affect state primaries until spring of next year. Events like these are the reasons why political divisions are a problem. Even the same political party can have divisions and deep tensions. These events in Texas can affect the process of resolving many social issues. Even if these events aren’t major most of the time little by little it divides the country kind of how it was during the Civil War.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/04/world/asia/t hailand-shooting-gun-violence.html?searchResultPosit ion=1

I chose it because it is an issue which is becoming more common around the world, and it something that has impacted and affected millions of lives. A 14 year old in Thailand had gone and shot up A mall. After the shooting had occurred, Thailand officials are wondering what laws need to be set and what changes need to be made in order to contain and prevent gun violence from reoccurring. Thai residents care because it puts their life in jeopardy and doesn’t guarantee them safety and can be impacted if not already but gun violence. Also, the national government of Thailand care because it is impacting their residents safety.

Gun violence, Innocent people are dying, including children. More kids are dying from firearms. Firearms are the number 1 cause of death for kids under 18. In the last 12 years the number of kids dying from firearms has increased while other causes like poisoning or suffocation have only decreased. More laws are being forced that put the blame on the gun owner even if they did not use the gun during the crime Gun owners care because they don’t want to have too restrictive of laws. Same with the people who’s been affected by a misused gun.

The gist of the article is how the nyc sanitation commissioner has started rolling out a brand new garbage bin design for nyc. These bins are designed to be more lightweight, easy to move/store, and can also deal with rats. Although this may seem like a small change, the new garbage bins are a small step towards revolutionizing how we deal with the garbage in the united states.
People should care because these trash cans- although a small change- can impact the way people would treat proper sanitation and cleanliness. Aside from bringing sanitation problems into light, it benefits us since these new cans as stated before, can handle rat issues as well.
