From briefly observing the character, I could tell that Joltik’s design is supposed to embrace his electric type with slightly rounded spikes and bright yellow color, keeping his double pair of eyes round and blue (which is complementary color for yellow) to show that he’s a little bug who can and will fight back. His silhouette supports my point, since it’s all spiky and looks like a little spark.

My first shape was a circle, so I immediately thought about changing his type from electric to water, to make him look for cuddly and bubbly. I’ve also decided to add purple corals on his back, using colors from Joltik’s evolution form - Galvantula. The colors were also changed to the warmer tone, with a little halftone pattern here and there.

The next shape is a triangle, which is a direct opposite from the circle, so I thought about how he would look like while attacking. First, I made sure to make silhouette as sharp and pointy as possible, slightly spreading his paws to make him look like he’s about to attack. Also, made his tale look like a scorpions’ tail, to make him look even more dangerous. The colors were brightened up slightly, to make it look like a thunder strike.

The last and the trickiest shape was the square. Usually, when we think of a square shaped character, we’d imagine someone who’s big and intimidating. So, how do I make a little bug look like that? My idea was to make him look like a little virus with a solid body and a skull shaped, projected face. Colors were barely touched, except I made the body darker, to highlight the face.

Overall, I think I did a good job adjusting already existing designs, making sure to emphasize the main ideas using details and shape language. However, silhouette is something I still need to practice more.
