There was no specific reason why I liked the rounded edges, I just thought they would make my column look better.

How To Column™

These are the (very rough) plans for the creation of my column. My column will have a rectangular base that is 4" by 12" long. The column will be split by some protruding squares, and the top half will be 4" by 5". My ridges will be placed on all four sides of the column, and they will all be 2" by 5". I will push pull them in by an inch. But, I could also create circular ridges, like shown on one of my reference columns. The bases of my columns will be 8" by 8" squares.

The final column!!! I came very close to my original goal. If you look back at my sketches, I followed them very accurately. I chose to go with the rectangular ridges instead of the circular ridges because the rectangles looked better on the face of my column. Also, I was originally going to have only one 8" by 8" square as my base, but I decided to do multiple squares because most of my reference columns have many squares on the base. Finally, I made the ridges in my column transparent to test out if I could do that or not. It turned out that I could, and it looked good on my column, so I kept it. Those were the only three changes I made to my original plan.
