This was the time era when it would have been weird for a women to write a book, and have people read it for money.  It was considered immodest and not very far from prostitution. The book came out anonymously, so she wouldn't be slammed for writing it.

In 1789 the French Revolution started. From 1793-1815 Britain was involved in  Napoleonic wars and revolutions. THe characters in Jane's book often refer to "officers", who were involved with the war with France. Austenw as from the Southeast coast of England, where a quarter of a million militia men and volunteers were serving. Therefore, Jane had close relations with the Militia, and her brother Henry was apart of it.

Jane was the second daughter of seven children. Jane's father was an educator for an Anglican parish, and her parents were well-liked in their community.  The children were encouraged to be well educated like their father, so they would read they books out of their fathers library and perform plays for fun. Jane and her older sister Cassandra were sent to get a more formal education at a boarding school when they were about 12 years old. in 1790 Jane began writing love stories/love letters in notebooks when she was a young teen. Her first book was "Love and Friendship."
