Often when individuals hear of the slavery topic, they think of African slavery in America. Many people infer slavery as this because of media and Hollywood movies that incorporate what African slavery was like in the 18th and 19th centuries. However, slavery did not only exist in the United States. Slavery exists to this day in other countries. One modern form of slavery is Child labor. Children in foreign countries are used by others for profit. The youth are taken advantage of and put into workplaces with harsh conditions. Bangladesh in particular is well known for having children put to work at a very young age to support their families. Some major American companies use children in Bangladesh for their benefit. Child labor is a large current issue that is not addressed enough to the public.

Several countries undergo child labor every day, and Bangladesh plays a massive role. Bangladesh is a country that is located in South Asia. Bangladesh has a legal minimum age for employment, which is 14. However, very many children are illegally employed and work in the shadows of Bangladesh. According to Garnett Consulting, approximately 7.4 million children under the age of 14 have jobs in Bangladesh. 1.2 million of these children are faced with jobs in their worst form. These children make on average only $4.25 CAD per week.

Due to the legal minimum employment age, common child workers in Bangladesh have jobs in areas that are enclosed from the public. Because of this, regulating and monitoring workplaces is difficult. This results in exposure to terrible working conditions. Children are put in unsafe, dirty factories and sweatshops. Almost all child workers are on the job seven days a week, facing brutal hours and earning nearly nothing for wage. 1 in 2 Bangladeshi youth workers are physically abused at their jobs. Being in an enclosed facility, these children are vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking. These workplaces are physically and psychologically draining.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LvUktJkc_Q

It is surprising that large companies such as Nike, Gap, and Walmart use children in Bangladesh to profit their industries. American companies pay next to nothing for Bangladeshi workers and products. Children are payed less than adults, which is why they are taken advantage of and used very often. Children are put in harsh workplace conditions and payed little income, for the benefit of American companies. It is less expensive for these corporations to make products overseas with child labor. Children in Bangladesh need jobs to provide for themselves and their families. Large companies take advantage of this by giving them a job, but paying workers small wages and putting them in unregulated, unsafe workplace conditions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L01E09MOAAU
