         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Knowledge:</strong>  <br>Learners have not completed a basketball scheme in St Angela’s College thus far. However, I expect that learners have a basic knowledge regarding the aim of the game of basketball and some of the skills involved. Basketball is a very popular sport in the school and some learners will have gained knowledge regarding the game from participating in extracurricular activities. Students have no previous knowledge of Sports Education. I imagine that the sports education will surprise them at first but they will enjoy it.  <br><br></div><div><strong>Skills:</strong> <br>Skills that we have worked on which are transferable to the scheme are running (Orienteering) and Coordination (HRA). Learners also have good communication and team work skills, which have been targeted in the last scheme. I would expect that all/most learners will be able perform some of the basketball skills without much instruction- dribbling a basketball. </div><div> </div><div><strong>Attitudes:<br></strong>Learners are enthusiastic towards PE and they always engage well in the activities. Furthermore, learners love looking at new activities, which is something, being under taken in this scheme, as this class have not played basketball previously. I have built up trust with this class which is why I feel comfortable undertaking Sports Education with them. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Rational for Sports Education with Basketball </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The reason for choosing basketball as the scheme to take us up to the Christmas holidays was because of where it is played: indoors. Having looked at various sports, and activities, I decided to try out an Educational Model: Sports Education (SE). Basketball and Sports education are a solid combination with each other. Selecting a sport/ activity to to use in conjunction with Sport Education was actually easier than I expected. Field Games or performance sports (Gymnastics/ Dance) lend themselves well to Sport Education. According to Hastie (1998) Sports Education provides:</div><div>“Opportunities for potentially marginalized students. Two groups of students who are potentially marginalized in team sports are girls and low-skilled students. Evidence shows that these students do indeed get a "fair go" during sport education seasons. Carlson (1995) writes of low-skilled students whose response to sport education is best summarized as "now I think I can." For these students, there is a belief not only that they improved in skill levels, but that they could also make a positive contribution to their teams. These feelings were accompanied by a sense of belonging and trust from their teammates” (p. 24-26). </div><div>In my school environment I only have girls so that part of the statement is irrelevant. However, after my last inspection, I identified one area to work on being something to offer non participants. Looking into the Sport Education model, there are so my roles and responsibilities are everyone to partake in. Therefore, basketball through (SE) was selected as a means to involve each learner in the lesson. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Organisation of Learning Enviroment </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>During the first week of the scheme students will be broken up into teams. They will then select their Team Captain/ Team Official/ Coach/ Equipment Manager and Players. The majority of the learning experience will take place in the teams around the hall. This comes hand in hand with the Sports Education model. The coaches will follow instructions from the teacher and relay them onto their team. Each lesson will begin with a warm up which is lead by the teacher. I considered allowing students to lead the wamr up however I felt that they are not competent enough to do this. Drills / games are planned so that a new skill is introduced each week. The players will learn from each other as much as possible. As they are a team, it is in everybody’s best interest that all the players can perform the skill. In the lessons, I will act as a facilitator rather than a teacher. I will be on hand to answer any questions, or be able to help a group struggling with a particular aspect – by pointing them in the right direction. The final week of the scheme will be a mini tournament between the teams. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-        Learners will learn the key words and phrases associated with Basketball. For example, pivot, jump stop, jump shot, and chest pass.</div><div>-        Learners will be given team booklets which will outline the roles and responsibilities of each team member. They must read and comprehend their roles.</div><div>-        Learners will be grouped at the start of the scheme. Throughout the scheme, teams will be given tasks and asked to work with their team. Students will discuss, listen to their peers, reason and compromise.  </div><div>-        Learners will engage with a class discussion at the start of each lesson throughout the four weeks. Open ended questions will be used by teachers to encourage the discussion. </div>]]></description>
