PCD5008 CORE TECHNIQUES 2 by Maya King

This module is deigned to further your understanding and appreciation of the core techniques of ballet, jazz, contemporary and commercial. Through practical classes you build upon physical and performance skills, working through more complex techniques and sequences. you will expand your knowledge of each genre through a deeper investigation of form and practise, exploring the complexities and points of variation within the genre, as well as area of 'fusion' that exist between forms. You will be encouraged to take responsibility of your own development and expand your self reflective skills, assessing your own development in making interpretive and stylistic decisions.

Luigi Warmup

‘Luigi was in a tragic car the driver lost control of the car. It crashed into a telephone pole, and Faccuito was thrown head-first into a curb. He doesn't remember anything about the accident. His family tells him that for a short time he was clinically dead. All he knows is that he suffered a horrible, disfiguring injury that left him partially paralysed.’ Schleir,C (1999). Doctors told him that he would never be le to walk again, but Luigi's biggest concern wasn't about whether he would walk again, it was about whether he would dance again. To regain control of his body he started to experiment and design his own stretches. Luigi’s aim in his warm up was to lengthen and stretch the body without strain and focusing on stabilising the body by pushing down on an invisible ballet barre. Each move has to be performed and executed precisely in order to properly warm the body rather than harm it. Mr Needham has taught us many times that everything we learn in the exercises we do somehow relates and links back to the warm up as it was the foundation for many of Luigi's exercises.

Grand Battment excercise

This exercise focuses on the power and the extension of leg but also the lines of the arms and fingers. One thing I truly struggle with is my Grande Battement to the front. My leg does not go any higher than 90 degrees in this position but in second (on good days) it tends to go near my ear which I do not understand. But in order to improve this and have all round elasticity I have to work on my flexibility more and push myself further in splits by working on my over split and laying flat down facing my leg and also facing away from my leg so that eventually my leg extensions will easily go near my ear in all positions. According to the Oxford University Press (2016) flexibility is ‘the ability to move a joint smoothly through its complete range of motion. There are two main types: static flexibility is the ability to move slowly into a stretched position and to hold the body still (e.g. the ability to sit in a splits position); dynamic flexibility is the ability to move quickly or at normal speed into a stretched position (e.g. gymnasts performing a split leap).’

This routine consists of leg extensions and two pirouettes with my hands in high parallel clasped together. I really struggled with this pirouette as having my hands in high parallel whilst turning puts me off balance. In order to achieve this difficult turn I had to activate my core, squeeze my buttocks and focus on pushing up on the ball of my foot before turning to establish the balance rather than turning beforehand. I forget the end of this routine due to being in shock that I completed the pirouette with high parallel arms. This shows i need to work on my retention skills.

I struggled with this exercise as I tend to get Tendu and Glisse mixed up when I am focusing too much and erasing the movement of my feet from my muscle memory. I will explain further along my Padlet wall in detail the difference between a Tendu, Glissade and Battement. Even though the main focal point of this exercise is the feet I also struggle with the 'decoration' of the arms as Luigi tends to use a range of opposition arms in his port de bras.

The isolation routine strongly focuses on each part of the body. In this routine we isolate our arms, hips, heads, legs and rib cage. The aim of these isolations is to become sharper with each movement and to challenge our brains to create dynamic simplified movement. (according to Oxford University Press (2012) Dynamic is an ‘adjective energetic, spirited, active, lively, zestful, vital, vigorous, forceful, powerful, positive; high-powered, aggressive, bold, enterprising; magnetic, passionate, fiery, high-octane; informal go-getting, peppy, full of get-up-and-go, full of vim and vigour, gutsy, spunky, feisty’). I think I did well with this exercise as I love sharp and clean movements I believe it is one of my strengths to perform. I like to focus on each body part and dissect what it is doing and what I need to do to improve it. What I need to improve on in this exercise is to focus on the performance with my face as it so easy to lose this due to concentrating on the movement. I truly do believe that the simplest routines are the hardest to perform.

I missed the filming process of this routine due to having MoveIt Rehearsals but I thought I would post this video on my Padlet anyway to review and show what I can learn off others. I’ve noticed that when I perform this routine I feel tired and out of breath which shows that my stamina is very weak. I can improve on this by doing high intense cardiovascular exercises and always doing routines constantly full out. This routine is a routine that requires strength, strong dynamics and performance and in this video I think Anna Smith is a great example of this. She always gives 100 percent even on days when she feels low and I am inspired and motivated by this as I can become easily unmotivated and lazy.

Turn sequence 2 was by far more difficult than turn sequence 1 as each move flowed in to another which resulted in having no time to pause and think about what was the next move or to catch up if you had went wrong whilst performing it. In this sequence it was very easy to go wrong as many of the movements in the routine are in others and my muscle memory tends to take me into the direction of performing a different sequence. An endure turn was included in this sequence which is I find extremely difficult to do as I am turning in a direction I am less trained in.

I do believe it used to be better due to the intense stretches given in gymnastics every day, but I find that once I am properly warmed up my body naturally goes into the flexibility position needed. My second strength I believe to be is my turns/pirouettes. I feel that as I have good core strength due to my foundations in gymnastics and doing harsh exercise (like climbing a rope whilst in box splits) that it is possible for me to achieve these turns/ pirouettes.

I tend to over think on the detail on what is needed in the genre so that when it comes to perform I forget what the movement actually is. I tend to doubt my technical skills and scare myself out of performing properly. This leads me on to my second weakness which is my performance skills. My performance skills in all dance genres needs to improve massively if I want to have a successful dance career. When it comes to performance I concentrate too hard on the steps that I am doing and forgot to use facial expression.
