Atticus feels it is important for Jem to better understand what Mrs. Dubose is going through so that he can see that there is more people than what meets the eye and what real courage is. Atticus wanted to show him what the real courage Mrs. Dubose was showing through her sickness. Atticus was showing Jem how Mrs. Dubose was using real courage, by her knowing she was going to die but wanted to go on her terms. "I wanted you to see something out of her-I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand."(149) Atticus also did this punishment to show the reasoning behind why Mrs. Dubose was so mean to the kids. By having the Jem read to Mrs. Dubose he let Jem see that Mrs. Dubose was very sick. Atticus thought this punishment was important, since he was able to show Jem the true meaning of courage and that he should mature and grow up a little.

it is important to Atticus that Jem better understands what Mrs. Dubose is going through. Atticus is trying to teach Jem that there is more to people than what meets the eye. Jem thinks that Mrs. Dubose is a horrid old lady because she is always yelling negative things to him and Scout from her porch. Jem, after getting fed up of hearing these things, tries to hurt her by destroying her flowers. Atticus and Mrs. Dubose then punish him by having him read to Mrs. Dubose. Through reading to her, Jem sees just how sick she is and, although the things she says may seem mean she is just speaking her mind and in a way trying to help them better themselves. This experience has taught Jem to be level headed, because he saw that the only thing that came of him taking his anger out on the flowers was boring and "a waste of his tim". It also taught him that people can be in a lot of pain and you might not see it until it's too late. When Mrs. Dubose first came into the story they saw her as an angry lady who had nothing to do so just spent her time insulting. By the end of Jems time with her she was a frail lady who was nearly dying and just needed some company. Lastly, as Atticus had predicted, Jem became more of a man in learning his importance and gaining maturity.

To Atticus it is very important that Jem understands what Mrs. Dubose is going through. In chapter 11 it explains Mrs. Dubose and her situation. Atticus wants Jem to know what real courage is. At first Jem thinks that Mrs. Dubose is cruel and mean but later find out that she has a morphine addiction. This teaches Jem that you have to look through people and Cannot just judge them by the outside cover. It also teaches you what bad things can happen to you. Mrs. Dubose accepted that she had ruined her body with the things that she had done. To her it was about living out the rest of her life despite what was happening. She took her fight day by day and that to me is real courage. She took her mistake and lived to the fullest. Atticus is trying to teach Jem to live life to the fullest.

It is important to Atticus for Jem to understand what Mrs. Dubose was going through. To both teach Jem what real courage is and that there are more to people than meets the eye. On the surface, Mrs. Dubose is a bitter, cruel old lady that cares for no one. What Jem finds out later is that Mrs. Dubose is struggling with a morphine addiction, making her have the bitter and cruel attitude that she has. This taught Jem that there are more to people than what's on the surface. Atticus explained to Jem that real courage is sticking something out for the whole time no matter what, even if you know it's going to have a negative outcome on you. Mrs. Dubose wants to die on her own terms, not on her vicious cycle of morphine; She wanted to die a free woman. That, to Atticus, was true courage.

It is important to Atticus that Jem better understood Mrs. Dubose for many different reasons. In chapter 11, Atticus wants Jem to understand that just because you are upset with someone or what they did, doesn't mean that you should also treat them disrespectfully. "You just hold your head high and be a gentleman." This chapter also reveals that Atticus is trying to explain to Jem that there is more to a person than what meets the eye. Everyone has their own individual struggles and you can never truly know what is happening to another person. This same theme of not know a person fully was first expressed in chapter 10.

It is important to Atticus that Jem better understands Mrs. Dubose and what is going on in her life. Jem's lesson here is that there is way more to people than he thinks. For example, Jem knew that Mrs. Dubose was a sick old lady. What Jem didn't know was that she was a morphine addict and she was dying. Jem didn't know the struggle she had been through and was wholeheartedly bent on anger toward her. Once Jem had learned more about her and spent time with her everyday, his heart softened for her. I think Jem's lesson will stay in his mind forever and change the way he sees other people.

In chapter 11 Atticus tells Jem that "courage is not a man with a gun in his hand, it's when you know you have been licked before you begin but you do it anyway no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." Atticus is basically teaching Jem how to deal with life when bad situations arise or when bad choices are made. Atticus understands that this is a lesson that Jem needs to understand as he gets older.
