My first impressions are "Yes, this is definitely Caesar,". I read his Gallic Commentaries over the summer, and we are translating the same commentaries right now in Latin, so I have some familiarity with his style at this point. And reading another commentary from him after getting familiar with him makes it easier to both read and enjoy what he has to say.

My first impression is that the fact that the author is from a first world country makes him kind of spoiled and privelaged, compared to the country that he's going into. He just wasted all of his savings to go on an around the world trip, which not many people can do. He was unprepared to care for the kids in the orphanage he was volunteering at, and he was using the fact that he was helping kids in a third world country to pick up women. The opening of the book is describing two characters, Dylan and Eric. They were two students from Columbine High School. I have a suspicion that Eric and Dylan were involved with the shooting. So far the author has really only talked about the history of extroversion and how it only farily recently became a cultural ideal. It makes me put things more into perspective about introversion vs extroversion and it really makes me wonder if that's an actual thing or just a thing made up by society. For me personally I feel like I used to be very introverted but in the past six months or so I've seen myself getting my energy from other people. It's been kind of reminding me that personality really is something you can change over time.

My first impression is how different Coates writes compared to the other books I've read this year. He writes metaphorically, and uses a lot of analogy when describing the "black body." The way he writes is very vivid like you're there with him as he's describing situations he's been put through.

Gary has just gotten out of jail and he has struggled with keeping jobs and friends, and to stay away from stealing and drinking. He also struggles with relating to society because of  his aggression. I was expecting it to have more of an introduction into the the author 's perspective and introduction into this new Russia but I guess they way he dives right into the nitty gritty of Russian society right away reflects the way his experiences actually went. When I wanted to read this book I was expecting the author to talk about how Russia is very materialistic and very much cares about how people think of them on the outside, and while it does mention that, there are still many details that shock me about their society because many things that would never or rarely happen in America are considered typical in Russia.

Adam Braun explains how he went form being a sheltered kid living in Connecticut to a college student whose dream was to travel abroad and discover the many cultures of the world. He embarks on a cruise that was meant to stop in South Korea, but instead had to stop in Hawaii due to a massive storm that severly damaged the ship. Braun's determination and confidence in his mission to be exposed to many cultures made me feel like I need to see the world. My favorite part about reading about psychology is the science and the medical side of it, which is why im very sastifed with my book choice because its all about that. By having read Prozac diaries and expecting a certain poetic tone from Lauren Slater to reading Opening Skinners box and getting a similar poetic tone but with the the research and scientific tone that i read in The Sociopath Next Door makes it probably the best book ive read all year in this class. I also love how this book dives into the history of psycology and also the morals of that time. First impression, sastified.

I expected a recently released prisoner to be wilder in the way he acted. Yet, Gary was surprisingly reserved which gave me the impression that he was smarter than he let on. As I read on, and as Gary struggled to hold odd jobs, reserve from drinking, and stealing, I saw that he was facing an internal struggle, which made me really sad. He was struggling to deal with societal norms that he had missed for the last ten years while incarcerated. I can't even imagine having to deal with people everyday who can't understand you, or what you've been through. After reading, throughout the book, about Gary's behavior I can't help but feel privileged and grateful that I'll, hopefully, never have to experience what Gary Gilmore went through. I just simply felt sad for Gary, even if he was a prisoner.

My first impression of this book is that it is very gruesome and intense because the author uses a bunch of foul language and goes in to detail on how hard the training to be a SEAL is and how it is straight hell and kicking his ass. The detail on the training and process to become a full SEAL shows how intense and gruesome the book is going to get.  My picture is the devil because  this book has made me realize that the military is like hell

  • My first impression is that this book is depressing because it is about Wold War II. The fact is that many people died in this war, whether they were the enemy or allies, and the book describes these deaths and it's fairly sad.  Another impression is a sense of pride because of the book also describes the battles we were in and what our men went through during this time.

When the author, Adam Braun, decided to dedicate his life to traveling the world to see new places through the eyes of the natives and locals rather than guidebooks, he discovered a whole new meaning for his life. From traveling and experiencing, Braun has discovered the disire for and power of education. Through these chapters I can now see the impact genuine hardwork and dedication to a greater cause can make on unfortunate people. My first impression from the character Gary Gilmore is that prison life is more difficult than outside people imagine. In the beginning of the book Gary had just been released and he was sheltered from so many things that had happened in the world since he was put away. His family expected him to adapt to his new surroundings but he faced many dilemmas. It made me mad that so many people struggled to understand why he couldn't just reform hiself after being in prison for the majority of his adult hood. My first impression about this book is that New York City must have been a terrible place to live in 1977. The rest of the country was unhappy with the state of the Big Apple and made political cartoons depicting it as a zoo. Uneployment rates were high and many cops lost their jobs causing crime rates to rise as well. One of my first impressions of this book was that it was different from the other books I've read this year in that its purpose is to analyze the plausibility of the science in sci-fi and fantasy works. It points out how certain concepts displayed by those works are impossible or go against what we know about science today and discusses different ways that the concept become possible or realistic. In doing so, I think that reading this book can "make" someone notice the science we see in our everyday lives and understand they function that way and not another.
