In the story, Mrs. Maloney undeniably murdered her husband because the story explicitly states that she struck her husband. The story is told from Mary's perspective, and it clearly shows her actions and thoughts as to how she killed her husband. Following this, she is described as shocked, further indicating her feelings. Although it was not explicitly stated in the story, her motivation for killing Patrick stems from his announcement of divorce, even as a pregnant mother. After the murder, she calls the police to come into her home to investigate. She offers them the lamb leg to eat, ensuring they destroy the evidence.

In this story, I believe Mrs. Maloney is guilty. Firstly, she intentionally kills her husband, Mr. Maloney, with a frozen leg lamb, which she later cooked to destroy the evidence. So basically, once she realized how bad her actions were, she devised a plan to cover it up. She creates and alibi and appeared innocent to the detectives. Then she, served the very weapon she used in the murder to the detectives to destroy any chance of it being found. She is definitely guilty.

In this story, I think Mrs. Maloney did commit murder for several reasons. Obviously she struck him with a frozen lamb chop she pulled out of the freezer, making it large and solid enough to function like a club. The cops said his skull was shattered which matches with the "weapon". Aside from that, she composed herself far too quickly, which can happen, but paired with her own belief that she killed him, doesn't plead her innocence. Next, she didn't call the police immediately. She came up with an alibi for herself and solidified it before doing so. Then, when they started talking about looking for the weapon, she asked them to eat the lambchop, which she had also put in the oven earlier to hide. And lastly, when they talked while chewing the meat, she laughed.

Mrs. Maloney did indeed commit murder. This is supported by multiple points. The first is one paragraph from the text, stating "At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head." This proves that she attacked him, combined with the following quote "She might as well have hit him with a steel bar.", which addresses that there was a lot of force contained within that blow, the force on par with that of a steel bar. Next, the text states that Patrick's body "...crashed onto the carpet.", which addresses that the blow from which Mrs. Maloney hit him at the very least knocked him down to the ground. Lastly, Mrs. Maloney herself outright admits (if only to herself - and by extension, us readers) that she has killed Patrick "All right, she told herself. So I've killed him.".

A psychological examination of Mrs. Maloney's actions:

Mrs. Maloney murdered her husband with a leg of lamb after finding out that he wants a divorce. Mary was, understandably, distraught at the news, and may have gone into a kind of shock. The text suggests that she did love Patrick, and couldn't bear the thought of him leaving. So, she did the most logical thing (in her mind): killed him. The passage states, "...and when she saw him lying there on the floor, it really was a
shock. All the old love for him came back to her, and she ran over to him, knelt down beside him, and began to cry hard. It was
easy. No acting was necessary." The fact that Mrs. Maloney cooks the leg of lamb, which is eaten by the police officers (effectively destroying the murder weapon, and evidence of her involvement in the murder), makes this the perfect crime. However, it is worth noting that, scientifically, murdering someone is meant to trigger feelings of guilt and responsibility; even people who have carefully planned the murder will be sent into a kind of panicked shock once the act is done (assuming it was the first time they had killed). Knowing this, the reader may assume that Mrs. Maloney is in shock herself, that the depth of her actions have not truly registered yet. After all, when the story began, she was nothing but an ordinary housewife, but by its end, she was a murder. "And in the other room, Mrs. Maloney began to laugh." (Though she is depicted as almost psychotic in this scene, her reaction must be examined to the fullest extent, nothing about this story is black and white).

I think she DID commit the murder. The text describes her sudden action as she swings the leg of lamb at his head when committing the crime towards her husband. We can also tell by the aftermath of this crime when she creates an alibi; going to the grocery store being "unaware." Because of societal expectations, her identity and stability tied to her marriage could've created a sense of threat losing her role, hence why she did what she did.

Mrs. Maloney did commit the murder. She used the frozen leg of lamb to kill him. The text states, "At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head". The detectives couldn't find a weapon because they ate the leg of lamb, and nobody else came into the house except for Mrs. Maloney. This is proof that Mrs. Maloney was the one who killed Patrick. It was murder because she was not justified. She killed her husband because he was leaving her, which is not a valid excuse to kill him.

I think Mary Maloney did commit murder because in the story it takes about how she had a lamb leg in the freezer and she wanted to "prepare" it for dinner, then she goes up with the lamb leg as hard as she can with it, but she ran to the grocery store so she can have witnesses. Someone who intentionally hits her husband on the head and goes away so she can have witnesses is something a murderer would do. So yes I believe that Maloney did commit murder.

Mrs. Maloney intentionally commits murder in Lamb to the Slaughter by striking her husband with a frozen leg of lamb.

Instead of confessing, she carefully plans an alibi, going to the grocery store to create witnesses. When the police arrive, she deceives them by acting like a grieving wife and even destroys the evidence by cooking the murder weapon and serving it to the officers. Her calculated actions, from planning to cover-up, prove that she was fully aware of her crime and worked to avoid punishment.

To defend the claim that Mrs. Maloney commits murder in the story, consider the following evidence. Mrs. Maloney strikes her husband with a leg of lamb, delivering the fatal blow. Her emotional state and motive, triggered by her husband's announcement that he's leaving her, suggest premeditation and intent. Furthermore, there's no indication of self-defense or justification for her actions. Instead, Mrs. Maloney conceals evidence by cooking the leg of lamb and serving it to the police, demonstrating deliberate deception. Her calm and calculated behavior after the murder also implies a level of control, supporting the claim that Mrs. Maloney commits murder in the story.

I think Mrs. Maloney did commit murder because she hit her husband on purpose with a frozen leg of lamb. After she killed him, she didn't tell the truth. Instead, she made a plan to cover it up. She acted like nothing happened and made sure people saw her. Mrs. Maloney then cooked the leg of lamb and gave it to the police to eat so they wouldn't find any evidence. Her actions show that she planned to hide what she did, which proves it was murder.

Mrs. Maloney committed a murder. Whether she intentionally meant to kill him or not is unknown, however she still committed murder and especially hiding it makes her furthermore guilty. She is guilty because she intentionally threw the frozen lamb leg to the back of his head and she knew that she had killed him and knew that the consequences would be grave, so she immediately came up with a plan to act like she hadn't killed him. The end was a huge cliffhanger, but when she laughed when the detectives and police said that the murder weapon had to be under their nose, that was a huge giveaway. Although what Patrick told her remains a mystery, she killed him and created a who coverup story.
