McClean even notes that the nursery (and all the other tech) has replaced the roles of their parents. Their whole lives, Peter and Wendy have only known things to be done for them by home appliances, and their imagination to only be fueled by a nursery. When you've grown up with such a paternal figure your whole life, only for it to suddenly be taken away from you, it is understandable for Peter to be so angry. Imagine if the roles were reversed, and Peter and Wendy decided to suddenly take George and Lydia's parents away. The same anger would result as both Peter/Wendy and George/Lydia hold these figures to a paternal standard. Bradbury clearly demonstrates Lydia's jealousy of the technology within their home, specifically the nursery. At the very beginning of the story, there is a moment where Lydia stops to watch the stove cook dinner on its own. Later, Lydia expresses how she feels the house has replaced her role as mother, wife, and nursemaid. In a sense, all the tasks that would normally be done by a mother for a child had been taken away from Lydia by the home. Dinner was cooked on its own, the nursery took care of and raised the children, appliances tied their shoes and even brought them to bed. Essentially, Lydia is left with nothing to do and no one to parent. All the things that make us human could one day be taken away by technology.
