Top 3 Questions

1. What are the elements of digital literacy?
Anything teachers want their students to learn needs to have an assessment. This question is important because what defines the elements of digital literacy will influence how it can be taught, how it will be perceived by students, and how important it is to incorporate into the classroom. We need to fully understand the elements, and the important role they have on our students' futures in order to teach and assess the skills digital literacy entails. I found this website on U.S. Digital Literacy to be interesting for this discussion, and I'd like to research it further.
2. How do we teach digital and literacy skills in a way that will best assist our students when the technology they will be using in their careers will be more advanced and ever changing?
This is an excellent question! With the current common core curriculum, students are taught to create solutions, and explain their reasoning with critical thinking skills. Students are beginning to be taught how to be innovators, not imitators. Students need to be taught scientific skills in order to be explorative and inquisitive, but I think they also need to be taught computer literacy skills in the same fashion. Technology is constantly changing, so students will need to have a foundation of skills that enable them to be adaptive. Also, it is very important for teachers to advance technologically so that we can best support our students in becoming digitally literate.
3. What parts of digital literacy are most important in the job market?
In my experience, being able to use Microsoft Office, and being able to type is not a skill to put on my resume. Like being able to read, write, and do basic math is a requirement for most jobs, so is being computer literate. Also in my experience, some of my students enjoy using computers in class, but cannot navigate computer functions, type, or use formatting functions on a basic level. It is still very early for them to be fluent in computer skills, but these types of occurrences made me think of this question. Are my students going to be able to compete in the future job market if they do not have enough access to computers in order to be technologically fluent? I'd like to research further the amount of digital literacy is required in the job market, and how that information is made known.
