The chapter talks about the interdependence of identity, environment and relationships in influencing a childs' development by incorporating theories from Erikson, Bronfenbrenner, Marcia and Baumrind. It brings attention to the role that teachers play in creating a nurturing and developmentally appropriate learning environments. The theories provide a good framework, individual variability and a variety of cultural variables can make real-world application challenging. This chapter shows how important it is for educators to embrace adaptable, student-centered methods that take into account pyschological theories as well as the particular requirements of each indivudal student. </p>]]></description>
