Destijds was de Kop van Zuid nog grotendeels onontwikkeld en slecht bereikbaar. Een watertaxi onderhield vanaf het begin een verbinding, maar pas met de opening van de Erasmusbrug in 1996 kreeg de pier een directe aansluiting op het centrum. Sinds 1997 ligt metrostation Wilhelminaplein in de buurt.


De HAL werd in 1873 opgericht als de NASM en vervoerde tot 1900 circa een half miljoen landverhuizers naar Amerika. In 1971 vertrok het laatste schip vanaf de pier. Het directiegebouw (1901-1917), ontworpen door Muller, Droogleever Fortuyn en Van der Tak, is een rijksmonument met jugendstilornamenten en twee karakteristieke torentjes.


Het hotel telt 72 kamers, conferentiezalen en een restaurant met 400 plaatsen. Sinds 2015 is er ook NY Basement. In 2016 werd het hotel vereeuwigd als KLM’s 97e Delfts blauwe huisje.

Rijk uitgewerkte gevels en een technologisch vooruitstrevende draagstructuur, een heldere hoofdvorm met een eerlijk materiaalgebruik zijn grotendeels nog gaaf aanwezig. Inmiddels is het pand verbouwd tot het Nederlands fotomuseum
