Motivation - The students as a whole in this class seem to be uninterested in writing and would rather work on subjects such as math or STEM. I thought it was important to design a lesson that really reflected student interest so they would enjoy writing. I knew creating real life Pen Pals would excited the students and therefore I knew I could incorporate this into writing.

The students will write the letter on their Chromebook and when finished turn in through Google Classroom.

Once all letters are turned in through Google Classroom I will have the students come back to the rug. I will then ask “What are the four elements to the letters that we are writing to our new Pen Pals?” The students will share their responses. I will then ask students who are excited to share to read out loud the friendly letter that they have written. After 5 or 6 shares I will close the lesson by reminding the students that we will have to wait for our response at that we will be writing letters to our Pen Pals all year long.

Overall the students as an entire class loved this assignment. They were excited to have an outline for the writing without being told exactly what to write. The students were also excited to know their letter was going to be read by a real person. My selected three students outperformed my expectations. Student 1 was once of the first students done and was eager to help others. Student 2 had little issues with the Chromebooks and even incorporated pictures into her letter. Lastly Student 3 seemed to be motivated to write. He wanted to share his interest with his PenPal and needed limited scaffolding other than the shared writing. Overall the class surpassed all expectations and I'm excited to continue this project throughout the year!
