In an attempt to modernize Istanbul the palace was built between 1843 and 1856 by Sultan Abdulmecid I.

It was home to six sultans between 1856 to 1924.

When the founder and first President of the Turkish Republic came to Istanbul, he stayed in the Palace, and he died there in 1938.

Until 1949 the Palace was used as a Presidential residence.
