There are evidence proving that it is the red bird. For instance, the author wrote, “Dead birds is bad luck,’ said Aunt Nicey, ‘specially red dead birds!” (pg. 424). Another quote in the story is when they find the ibis, struggling to fly. “On the topmost branch a bird the size of a chicken, with scarlet feathers and long legs, was perched precariously.” (pg. 423). The bird represents Doodle, because they are both unable to do something. Later in the story, Doodle dies. Both quotes are in the story because it makes the reader predict that Doodle dies at the end.

The bird is a symbol for Doodle, in the end of the story the narrator goes back to find Doodle laying next to a tree after his death of overusing his heart while trying to catch up to his brother. The narrator screams his brother’s name over and over but receives no response, he lays down next to Doodle sobbing and said “For a long, long time, it seemed like forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain.”

Doodle looks up a bleeding tree and discovers “a great big red bird” injured, it’s wings were uncoordinated and it’s legs were curved. Mama explains to Doodle that it is dead and later on, Doodle’s father finds out that it's a Scarlet Ibis, a bird that wasn’t native to where they lived. Doodle was told not to touch the dead bird because it could carry diseases he soon thinks of a different way and lifts it up with a string. The Scarlet Ibis hangs on the string carelessly and Doodle buries it in a hole in his flower garden.
