2) It was really considerate and seemed sincere when the guards took up a collection so the family could go to Limerick. Was there a reason for that or were they just being sincere?

3) The main reason the McCourt family is moving is to find a better life. Unfortunately, the relatives that they are currently living with in Chapter 2 seem to be very rude and unfriendly. 

            Ex) When Frank goes to ask for help, Aunt Aggie grumbles, "Ye are nothing but trouble since ye came from America."

Why does the father have to be so proud? He doesn't want his wife picking up coal from along the road because that's what the poor do. But they are poor.

2) When the family first meets Angela's mother, she scorns Francis and Malachy for not knowing their own religion. Even the poorest of people can still practice Catholicism, so why can't Angela tell her own children about God just as Malachy Sr. can drone on about tales of Ireland?

3) Throughout the chapter Angela feels inclined to say "God bless you" as she receives help from others; I find this act to be superficial and provisional. Even though Malachy is worthless, he still prays to the various patron saints and manages to retain his "morality". She doesn't have the resolve to be religious before she was given help, so why would she be inclined to start now?

2) It is very unfortunate to see the resentment towards people of different religions (Protestant/Catholic), different regions of the country (North/South), and even the teacher who hates America.

3) Dealing with such cruel teachers must be terrifying. Times are so tough on the McCourts. It's hard to imagine being in their scenario.

2) I'm surprised that the first slap that Frankie's father gave (to Malachy) was when he was sober. Even though it was terrible that he spent all the money on booze, I'm happy that he wasn't an abusive drunk.

3) I think that it would be terrifying for a child to spend the night at a jail, especially with the creepy lady with the butterscotch. By Frankie being so open to receive it, it shows that he doesn't question those who are older than him.
