The protein altered in redheads is called MC1R. This protein makes pigments; they give skin and hair their color. Different hormones activate the MC1R receptor. When MC1R is active it makes black pigments and when its inactive it makes red pigments.

In redheads, usually the MC1R gene has three single-base variations. Even if one amino acid is changed then it can influence how much MC1R gets to the surface and how it responds from the signal. The reason why redheads have red heads is because they have a limited amount of functioning MC1R proteins and therefore they only create red pigments.

All vertebrates contain the MC1R gene. In jaguars, MC1R contributes to the color variations between them; which can be spotted or black. MC1R also affects how well whiplash lizards blend in with their environment. Feather color is also influenced by the MC1R gene.

Variations, Disease, or Both?

The answer is both. Variations in the MC1R gene play a role in a person developing different skin and hair color. Yet there are some downfalls to being a redhead. Since they have less dark skin pigment they are at a higher risk for getting skin cancer.
