Sloane is an Educational Studies major concentrating in Child Psychology and Development. Over the course of the semester, we have explore different aspects of how neurodivergence is treated within the Black community. In this class we learned about different treatment, diagnosis, medical racism, and discrepancies in the educational system.

The exhibit below will explore Black Neurodiversity in not only education, but also special education programs as well. This exhibit is based on an artifact found regarding Lee Alderman, the first Autistic student to graduate as valedictorian from Cardozo Senior High in Washington D.C. Lee's story does not only highlight his accomplishments, but it also represents how special education programs are not always the best fit for students. Lee's mother, Hazel Robinson, felt as though the private school he was placed in to accommodate his learning abilities were too easy for her son. In order to try to give him more independence and more academic possibilities, Hazel enrolled her son in Cardozo Senior High School where he began to flourish. 

Hazel's advocacy for her son not only highlights how important parental advocacy for neurodivergent children is, but it also brings attention to how special education programs do not benefit every child.
