Women in Power

Johnson mentions how a person's family. religion or taught behaviors shape the lives of people. For many years, Hispanic women were told to listen to their fathers, older brothers, and husbands. We've become property for men as our fathers hand us to our husbands at the altar. However, there has thankfully been a change over the years, where women have grabbed their power back from men. I remember growing up and my parents teaching me that I could and will be independent. I do not get directions from any men because I do not have to be controlled by the patriarchy. This image just shows the start of so much for women as they don't have to listen and stand under men.

Implemented Toxic Masculinity

Connell wrote that the idea behind masculinity can be internalized and interiorized as a behavior learned from generation and how they are accountable. Ever since they were young, boys in the Hispanic culture were implemented that they had to be strong, provide for their families in the future. It became the second voice in their head that constantly reminded them of what their parents taught them was the "right way" to being a man. It's something they grew up around, that became the new normal for them. It's the only thing they knew about being men. Being "men" became a thought forced down their throat. Because of this, many boys created internalized homophobia because there was no acceptance of being comfortable with one's gender and sexuality. All they knew was to be powerful and have the highest roles in society.

Social Construct of Gender Roles

Lorber's text mentioned how in society, people know what is expected from them based on what they see, experience, and interact with within society, creating that gender role expected from them. I remember growing up and hearing my male cousins be told that they are not allowed to cry and toughen up. My male friends would also tell me how they never learned how to demonstrate their emotions because they were told to block them off their whole lives. Just like the image, they were constantly told to not cry, "man up," and if they did were shamed by being told they were just like "girls." Because of this, men have created this trait as part of their expected gender role where men are more apathetic and serious. It became a way that women were okay with being weak, and being compared to women was offensive and an insult. While bringing down men, it also brings down women as we were told we had to be delicate, sweet, and sensitive.

Today's Change

A winter that I was in Mexico, I heard my grandfather yell at my dad to get out of the kitchen because that was the women's place as we prepared for Christmas dinner. My dad quickly responded by telling him that there was no issue with helping my mother and grandma with the tamales. This image shows a perfect depiction of the change happening because there are now men in the kitchen helping and even taking care of the children. Before, if men helped or even the women showed any little power, he was made fun of and told that he was a mantenido, someone being provided for. Within the Hispanic culture, this was a terrible thing as we grew up with the men supporting their wives and family. However, it is great to see there is a change starting as men become more comfortable helping around the house and women are grabbing their power back.

Machismo within Patriarchy

Machismo is a term within the patriarchy where men usually hold the power over women. Society has been run by men, where they hold the majority of the power and predominant roles. Just like this photo depicts, patriarchy and machismo have men above women and control them like puppeteers. Being Hispanic, households are also run by fathers and the oldest sons. There is a toxic masculinity culture where women are controlled by men and have no say. They stay home and look after the family where the men work and bring in the funds.
