-Occurs from birth through about 12-18 months of age.
- The infant finds sexual pleasure through sucking and putting anything that will fit into their mouth.
- The erogenous zone is the mouth.
- Too much gratification in this stage can lead to smoking, nail biting, alcohol abuse, and overeating in their adulthood.
-Too little gratification can lead to the development of traits that are suggestive to passivity, clinging dependence, and a pessimistic outlook in their adulthood.

-You enter this stage at about 18 months of age, and it lasts until about the age of 3 years old.
- The primary erogenous zone is the anal cavity.
- The child develops the ability to control elimination by contracting and releasing the sphincter muscles at will.
- This stage creates conflict between the parent and child around the issue of "potty training".
- The child learns to earn the parents approval through using the potty at the correct time, the child delays immediate gratification of the need to eliminate whenever the urge is felt.
-If potty training is too harsh it can lead to anal-retentive personality, which is perfectionism, the extreme need for self-control, orderliness, cleanliness, and neatness.
-Extremely lax training leads to the anal-expulsive personality, which is messiness, lack of self-discipline, and carelessness.

- Roughly from the ages of 3-6 years old.
- The erogenous zone shifts to the phallic region, which is the penis for males and the clitoris for femails.
-Conflicts with the parents over masturbation ( self-stimulation of the phallic region), which emerges in this stage.
- Core conflict is the Oedipus complex, or the Electra complex. Oedipus complex is for males, and Electra complex is for females. This is when they develop incestuous desires for the parent of the opposite sex, which leads to a rivalry with the parent of the same sex.
- Boys tend to forsake these incestuous feelings and identify with their fathers. Girls tend to surrender their incestuous feelings and identify with their mothers.
- Males develop aggressive and independent traits associated with masculinity.
-Females develop nurturant and demure traits associated with femininity.
-In this stage children develop the superego-the internalization of parental values in the form of a moral conscience.
-Freud believed that failure to successfully resolve Oedipal conflicts may cause boys to become resentful of strong masculine figures, especially authority figures. For both sexes, failure to identify with the parent of the same sex may lead to the development of traits associated with the opposite sex and could lead to homosexuality.

- Freud also believe that boys would develop castration anxiety. This is when they fear that their father will castrate them for the sexual desires they have for their mothers. This unconscious fear causes boys to forsake their incestuous feelings.
- For girls, Freud believed that they would experience penis envy, or jealousy that boys had a penis. This jealousy leads girls to feel inferior or inadequate in relation to boys and they tend to unconsciously blame their mother for bringing them into the world so "ill-equipped".This leads girls to forsake their incestuous desires and identify with their mother in fear of losing their mother's protection and love. As girls mature they replace the desire to have a penis with the desire to have a baby.
- Freud believe that this stage happens on an unconscious level. Everything can seem quiet on the surface, masking the turmoil occurring on the inside.

- Occurs between the ages of 6 and 12 years old.
- The turbulent psychic crisis of the phallic stage gives way for this relative tranquility stage.
- This stage is named latency stage because of the belief that sexual impulses remain latent (dormant) during this age gap.

- Enters this stage around puberty.
- The forsaken incestuous desires for the parent of the opposite sex gives rise to the desire for more appropriate sexual partners of the opposite sex.
- Girls may be attracted to boys who resemble her father, while boys may be attracted to girls who resemble their mother.
- These sexual energies tend to be expressed through mature (genital) sexuality in the form of sexual intercourse in marriage and the production of children.
