To deflect a harmful look, it had to be attracted towards something striking that would absorb the evil.  Bawdy images were thought to be the most effective at drawing glances.  Visitors to holy shrines could purchase these cheap souvenirs to be worn about their bodies. Some of the badges even show pudenda pilgrims themselves wearing badges. Medieval medicine and magic were not separate categories. Large quantities of badges have been found in rivers all over Europe since the 19th century.

Roch is otherwise robust and healthy, giving devotees hope of recovery. The saint is said to have tended the sick, performing miraculous recoveries, until he fell ill and was expelled from the town. He was saved by the faithful dog from a nearby estate who brought him bread and licked his wounds. Some cities ordered the mass executions of dogs as a (misguided) plague measure; certainly the saint's companion was a rebuke from dog-lovers.

One named "Labalb"
 affected Gondar in 1683. Does this image depict it?
