Slavery because that's what split most of the Americans, deciding to have slaves or not have slaves. The people who had slaves were against the people who didn't have slaves and that was a big part of the civil war. The election was a big part because when the president was elected he could choose whether he wanted slavery or not and whichever side he did not want could not do much about it. Sectionalism was a big part because the people of the land would divide themselves up and this would have the South and the North which had complete different believes. When they were in different parts there was a constant struggle to keep the boarder states on there side.
