JD has two vastly different parts of himself that he, throughout the movie, has to try and accept but also combine. The movie tells the tale of JD's journey and struggle to break his social heritage and to make something of himself.

There is a turning point in the movie, when JD realises how much his grandmother does to help him, and how ungrateful he has been.   • The journey starts with JB in his holiday house in Jackson, Kentucky. Here you get a good view of how the lives of hillbillies are. What their values are and why they act like they do.

  • The choice between family and job (when mom overdosed) (22min)
  • In a flashback. He has to choose between sending his mom to jail or pretend nothing happened - he chooses to luy to the police because he loves his mother too much - and he keeps loving her (36min)
  • When Mamaw has taken JD to live with him she gives him an opportunity to get a chance in life or screw up as his mother did. (1.30)

  • So, the obstacles Vance meets are all related to his background and this is why it is harder for someone like Vance to get a good education and that is why most of them end up like their parents due to the lack of pattern breakers.

  • The theme of this film is that it is possible for whoever - even a hillbilly - to get a great education and a great life. The importance of Vance’s memoir - which is what the film is based on - is for people to reflect on one of the greatest problems in The United States of America - the repression of the Appalachian people.

His first major development happens when he realises his grandma needs him, and that she does a lot for him. This realisation contributes to him trying to get better grades, helping out in the house and not complaining. This development is shown in a montage, which starts at 1:35:30 and ends at 1:36:40 with him receiving the highest grade in the class, thus gaining a sense of hope. 

The second development is him in the present where he, in his state of mind, almost returns “home”. Physically he’s back, which makes him realise how important his family is to him, which even makes him question if going back for the interview is really the right thing to do. In spite of his contemplations, he decides to go to the interview, as that’s the only way he can really do good and eventually save his family. This epiphany comes at 1:43:10 when his mother is asking him to stay. He then says “I’ll do everything I can, but I can’t stay. I’m not saving anyone here.”, subsequently leaving his mom in order to reach the interview in time and hopefully be able to help her financially someday.

  • Another obstacle Vance meets is his mother. During his entire life she has been struggling with drug addiction. Even when Vance has left home to become a lawyer, his mother drags him home because she overdosed. This incident could have ruined his career.

  • at some point the journey starts when he decides to do something about his life → one of the main points of the memoir is that “your are responsible for your on life and therefore your future” → when he work hard instead of being mad at everyone it pays off

  • Mainly mental obstacles. They are related to his background, and the kind of family he comes from. Problems such as receiving a good education, a good and kind girlfriend, and in general a good or better life. 
    • Though some physical obstacles do come from his childhood. An example being when his grandmother decided to take care of him on her own. It was often hard to get enough money for dinner. And for school supplies such as the calculator.

  • The film shows that everyone can achieve anything in life despite having all the odds against them → american dream
  • The film also shows the struggles that the "hillbillies" has faced since the globalization (drugs, unemployment etc)
