Walter to Beneatha: “Who the hell told you you have to be a doctor? If you so crazy ‘bout messing ‘round with sick people—then go be a nurse like other women—or just get married and be quiet…” p. 38 

This quote shows that being a doctor was not common around this day and age. No woman's goals when she decided her career was to be a doctor. It was more common to be a nurse or just a housewife. As Walter further backes up, a lot of people were not supportive of what she had her mind set upon, but through everyone's opinions nobody could change Beneatha's mind on being a doctor. “I’m just tired of hearing about God all the time. What has He got to do with anything. Does He pay tuition? … It’s just that I get tired of Him getting credit for all the things the human race achieves through its own stubborn effort. There simply is no blasted God—there is only man and it is he who makes miracles!” p. 50 

This quote shows Beneatha's confusion on what God does to help her. In her household, she is in a strong Christian based home. She hears all the time of God being this magical man that blesses people with miracles up above. This is her definition of God and this is the only way she can see him being real. She seems to feel that she is not being blessed with these miracles. Her tuition is not getting payed, and she still lives in a cluttered house. Beneatha has difficulties understanding her culture and ethnicity.

I do sympathize with Beneatha, because all she wants to do is accomplish her dreams. I can relate to her because what I am passionate in, people have tried to put me down and say I was not good enough for it. She does not listen to the criticizes and she continues to achieve her goals.I do think Beneatha is a good person because I admire her passion and her drive for what she believes in. Beneatha shows that anything is possible with perseverance. She shows that even tho her career was not for women, nothing is impossible. She shows that she would not give up until she came out with what she has strived for. Like the poem says one must choose their paths, and Beneatha's path was not easy. She is very driven and focused to her career. She is not focused on getting married, that will come last she is focused on getting her money. That is what the song says, how a women can make her own money and provide for herself, without the need of a man to provide for her. In fences the only reason they have the house is because of Gabes check, and the only reason in ARITS has their house is because of Walter's dads passing ( it was his insurance check). Money was the reason most of the conflicts had arisen in the plays. Like money was the reason Walter gambled the money in the first place, also money was the reason troy would not sign the college letter because he wanted cory to work while playing sports.
The drive is also there for some of the characters. Both Cory and Beneatha wanted to accomplish things that were not common for their kind. Beneatha wanted to be a doctor when only men were doctors, and Cory wanted to play football when sports were not really for colored people. They both had obstacles that tried to hold them back to accomplishing their dreams.
