Problems

• gender reveals as metaphor for how we need gender equality

• lack of trust in women's abilities

• lack of safety/women don't feel secure - their rights are not protected

• more effort is required for women for the same work

• invisible work, and most of the time men get the credit for how well a family is

• domestic violence

• distribution of resources - intersectionality (a poor woman will get less/the least)

• vicious circle of demotivation (if women get demotivated, they will be even less so with every new effort)

• the fluidity of gender is not a priority in the African context, more of a binary understanding

Solutions:

• intentionality

• there's a binary understanding of gender even within the SDGs => a need to address this

• it's not about others to do grand things, but each one of us in a micro environment, we need to walk the talk

• holding the people around us accountable

• structurally, to push national governments to incorporate gender equality in their constitutions

• gender responsive policies

• empowerment programmes aligning with gender responsive policies and infrastructures

• a woman doesn't need to be a man to be empowered

• educate men, create safe spaces for men -> mental health programmes

• grass-route level: education in the families, educating children

• partnerships, not sole responsibility over the non-profit and grass-route level, but governments, private sector

Pre-requistes and issues

• Improvement of livelyhoods (e.g. if you have no money/housing/food you will not even think about politics)

• Civic education (motivates young people to engage and increases understanding)

• Political education

• Policy reforms and having intention (real implementation of Youth policy)

• Issue of trust (lack of trust in political systems)

Recommendations & ideas to tackle the issues

• Consultations (politicians need to get more out of their "offices" really visit e.g. rural areas)

• Voting (age of 16 as an aim)

• Youth inclusion in descion-making at the global level

• Youth Advisory Board (to create more opportunities, Plattform for youth engagement in political representation)

• Decentralization (gived a chance for young people to start engaging at grassroot level)

• To involve more young people (e.g. at school, to do more projects to involve everyone, in some school systems there is not the subject of holistic or civic education, so a lot of young people are not interested to it or also don't vote)

• Having more young people at the parliament (to have more examples to follow and to give a chance to the young people and not only the old people)

• Women in politics (different perspectives and gender equality)

• Proportional representation of the population (age, gender etc.)

• Representation of the interests of Youth in economic policy (who's economic interests are represented less - the ones of the young people)

3. How can we succeed in establishing strong international partnerships on this topic (SDG17)?

     • but also taking strongly emitting companies itself in responsibility (through campaigning etc.)
