The British Journal of Criminology: An International Review of Crime and Society is one of the world's top criminology journals. It publishes work of the highest quality from around the world and across all areas of criminology.

BJC is a valuable resource for academics and researchers in crime, whether they be from criminology, sociology, anthropology, psychology, law, economics, politics or social work, and for professionals concerned with crime, law, criminal justice, politics, and penology. In addition to publishing peer-reviewed articles, BJC contains a substantial book review section.

The Journal welcomes submissions from a variety of perspectives focusing on crime and society; and especially articles written from sociological, historical, philosophical, geographical, psychological, jurisprudential, cultural, political, or policy standpoints. The interests of the extensive Editorial and International Advisory Boards are catholic, neither narrowly ideological nor limited to rigid conceptions of what criminology either should be, or is currently, about.

Whilst the journal endeavours to be as inclusive as possible in terms of its content, its aim is also to publish the best work currently ongoing within the discipline. The two main criteria according to which articles submitted for publication will be assessed are: the degree to which the article contributes new knowledge to an understanding of crime and society; the overall quality of the argument and its presentation.
https://academic.oup.com/bjc

According to my colleagues at the University of Montreal, criminology “is the multidisciplinary study of the criminal phenomenon”. It makes use of the humanities and social sciences (psychology, sociology, law, etc.) to understand the crime, the criminal, the victim, criminality, and society’s reaction to crime.

Although everyone is aware of the criminal phenomenon, particularly through media exposure, the public understanding is often anecdotal and fragmentary. The criminologist looks beyond the headlines and takes a rigorously analytical and critical approach to criminality. He begins by analyzing the crime, before examining the type of intervention employed.

Criminology is also an applied discipline. The criminologist is trained, for example, to decide whether a prisoner should be granted conditional release, or to propose a strategy for tackling an explosion of vehicle theft in a parking lot. He thus develops risk prevention and risk management strategies that take into account the dynamics of crime and the ethical and political stakes surrounding it.

There are many journals covering criminal law, the criminal sciences and sociology, but very few international criminology reviews. We therefore aim to provide a space for open-minded dialogue, comparison, and criticism, which takes into account diverse approaches while avoiding sterile arguments about the nature of the discipline itself.

A crime is the unique combination of a perpetrator, a victim, and a set of circumstances. Its individual and quantitative analysis requires scientific methods and specific intellectual and technical abilities.

In The Rules of Sociological Method (1895), Emile Durkheim emphasizes that “[…] A number of acts can be observed, all with the external characteristic that once accomplished, they provoke this particular reaction from society known as punishment. We make of them a group sui generis, on which we impose a common rubric. We call any punished act a crime and make crime thus defined the focus of a dedicated science: criminology”.
Such is the scope of this Journal.
http://www.ipsonet.org/publications/open-access/ijc

The European Journal of Criminology is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing high-quality original research. It is the prime European source for authoritative information and analysis on crime and criminal justice issues. Launched in January 2004 by the European Society of Criminology in partnership with SAGE Publishing, the journal seeks to open channels of communication between academics, researchers and policy makers across the wider Europe.
At a time when crime and punishment is being hotly debated across Europe, European Journal of Criminology brings together broad theoretical aaccounts of crime, analyses of quantitative data, comparative studies, systematic evaluations of interventions and discussions of criminal justice institutions.

Each issue includes a ‘country survey’ to summarize essential facts about a country's criminal justice system, review trends in crime and punishment, and discuss major publications in recent years.

"As criminology becomes steadily more international and comparative in its focus it is timely that this new journal should be launched. With its broad focus and special features it will be required reading for anyone interested in European penal systems and practices." Tim Newburn,London School of Economics, UK

"The need for a comparative and international criminology has never been so apparent or so urgent.

Norberto J. de la Mata Barranco
Professor of Criminal Law. University of the Basque Country UPV / EHU

Cohecho. Corrupción política. Casos de corrupción política. Caso Noos. Delitos contra la Administración.

ABSTRACT: It is necessary to delimit clearly the concept of political corruption, from a legal point of view, understand what are their characteristics and distinguissh it legally from other crimes that can be performed within corrupt frames, but have a unfair content different. The legal reality of the Spanish courts allows to analyze crimes that come into play when it comes to fight it, the problems that presents the research of what really happened and legal issues that need further discussion. Improvements in the effective response to corruption do not need to intensify a punitive arsenal already sufficient but avoid the possibility for scenarios that facilitate corrupt behavior.

Criminal Behaviour & Mental Health – CBMH – aims to publish original material on any aspect of the relationship between mental state and criminal behaviour. Thus, we are interested in mental mechanisms associated with offending, regardless of whether the individual concerned has a mental disorder or not. We are interested in factors that influence such relationships, and particularly welcome studies about pathways into and out of crime. These will include studies of normal and abnormal development, of mental disorder and how that may lead to offending for a subgroup of sufferers, together with information about factors which mediate such a relationship. We are particularly keen to attract treatment studies and studies evaluating the impact of a range of interventions and new services designed to increase public safety as well as the safety and well-being of the perpetrators of crime and their victims.

CBMH welcomes a wide range of methodologies and formats. Both qualitative and quantitative research is welcomed, from both laboratory and field conditions, as are systematic reviews. Case histories are not excluded, but have to be presented with the same theoretical and methodological rigour as any other research considered acceptable for publication. Potential authors are referred to the guidance for authors for further information about requirements on length, style, format and ethical issues.

CBMH should be of interest to clinical and non-clinical practitioners working with offenders with and without identified mental disorder. University students and researchers in clinical disciplines and in non-clinical disciplines such as criminology and law should find the material particularly useful. CBMH would also be useful for policy makers and government departments.

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14712857

Crime, Punishment, and the Law is a journal that is broad in scope but seeks to highlight multinational research related to crime and justice around the world. Specifically, the intent of this journal is to provide a comparative examination of policing, judicial, and correctional operations within the global community, while also focusing on various specialized issues such as crime prevention, peacekeeping efforts, transnational organized crime, terrorism, drug trafficking, multinational policy making, multinational legal analyses, as well as issues related to race and racial tensions in criminal justice settings. The topics just mentioned are by no means all inclusive, but instead demonstrate the breadth of issues that are covered by this journal.

STUDENTS:
-GIULIETTI, VALENTINA
-ROLÓN, EMILIANO

Crime and the Life-Course, Prevention, Experiments, and Truth Seeking: Joan McCord’s Pioneering Contributions to Criminology

A life-span developmental approach describes Joan McCord’s career and highlights her pioneering contributions to criminology and, more broadly, to understanding human development. The main focus of this article is on her exceptional scientific contributions through the assessment of the Cambridge-Somerville Youth Study experimental preventive intervention. We highlight her efforts to understand how a delinquency prevention intervention caused iatrogenic effects and the lessons she drew for evaluation research. Important contributions to key issues in developmental criminology are summarized, such as the different roles of mothers, fathers, and neighborhoods in the development of delinquency as well as the importance of differentiating discipline from punishment. We describe how Dr. McCord relied on philosophy, how she tackled oppositions between theory-driven and data-driven research in criminology, and how she helped young investigators learn how to learn, and we end by highlighting her contributions to the organization and development of criminology in the United States and around the world.

Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Criminology Volume 2 is January 13, 2019.
The New Regulatory State and the Transformation of Criminology

Abstract

The forms of government and social relations that increasingly characterize contemporary society are giving rise to new ways of thinking about crime and crime control. In particular it is argued that although the discipline of criminology is currently well established in institutional terms, the intellectual tools of the discipline are of diminishing relevance to the social world that is now emerging.

The article describes the major developmental trends in government policy as involving a shift from a welfare state, governed by Keynesian techniques of demand management to a new form of regulatory state, premised upon a neo-liberal combination of market competition, privatized institutions, and decentred, at-a-distance forms of state regulation. These new styles of governance are premised upon a recognition of new social forces and mentalities, particularly of the globalizing logic of risk management, and they will increasingly reconfigure the social and political fields in ways that have consequences for the policing and control of crime.

Criminology’s traditional focus upon street crimes and the institutions of police, courts and prisons may be decreasingly relevant to the new harms, risks and mechanisms of control that are emerging today. The innovative work of‘regulatory state scholars’ such as Clifford Shearing is identified as pushing criminology in new directions that confound the discipline’s traditional boundaries but which give it more leverage in the attempt to understand and respond to the control problems of the end of the century. The possibilities for restorative justice in the new context are also discussed, as are other methods for combating insecurity, and both are linked to the importance of developing forms of local knowledge that are informed by a sense of the global development context.

It is argued that the Keynesian state has been replaced by a new regulatory state that is a more Hayekian response to a risk society. Clifford Shearing is identified as a criminological theorist who has come to terms with these developments, especially in his collaborations with Phillip Stenning, David Bayley, Tony Doob and his colleagues at the Community Peace Foundation in Cape Town. Shearing et al. are forging a new paradigm (that incorporates the restorative justice paradigm) which might just transcend criminology and become something of general import to the social sciences.

Personal networks and crime victimization among Swedish you

ABSTRACT

We combine routine activity theory, lifestyle-victimization theory, and a social network perspective to examine crime victimization. In particular, we study to what extent crime victimization is associated with having close contacts who have been victimized and/or who engage in risky lifestyles. We use the data (collected in 2014) of 1,051 native Swedes and 1,108 Iranian and Yugoslavian first- or second-generation immigrants in Sweden who were all born in 1990. They were asked to describe their personal characteristics, various behaviours, and past personal experiences with crime victimization, as well as those of the five persons with whom they most often spend their leisure time. Our findings support the network perspective: crime victimization is negatively associated with the number of close contacts an individual mentions but is substantially more likely for those who have many close contacts who have themselves been victimized. In terms of a risky lifestyle that may enhance the likelihood of being victimized, we found only that individuals who get drunk frequently were at somewhat higher risk of being victimized. To guard young individuals against crime victimization, it might thus be worthwhile to focus more on with whom they associate than on their potentially risky lifestyles or attitudes.

KEYWORDS: Crime victimization, personal networks, routine activity theory, lifestyle-victimization theory, Sweden, youth
